Detection of New Emission Components in Psr B0329+54

چکیده
To study the structure of emission beam, we have analysed the single pulse data of PSR B0329+54 at 325 and 606 MHz. In order to unambiguously detect the weak emission components, we have developed a new data analysis technique, which we term “window–thresholding”. By applying this technique to the data, we have detected three new emission components, and also confirmed the presence of a component which was proposed earlier. Hence our analysis indicates that PSR B0329+54 has nine components, which is among the highest of all the known pulsars. The symmetric distribution of pulse components about the pulse centre, indicates that the emission beam is conal. 1. Data Analysis For the strong pulsar PSR B0329+54, the high-quality single pulses are easily observable. We obtained the data at 325 MHz in March 1999 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope near Pune, and the data at 606 MHz was obtained in August 1996 using the 76-m Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. For the analysis, we considered about 2500 single pulses at each frequency. The time resolutions of data at 325 and 606 MHz were 0.516 and 0.250 ms, respectively. To estimate the pulse profiles which clearly show the presence of weaker components we developed a ‘window-threshold’ technique. In this technique, we set a window in longitude and employ an intensity threshold while considering the single pulses for making average profiles, i.e. we consider all those pulses, which have intensity levels above the threshold within the window. For threshold the rms in intensity was computed from the off-pulse region. In Figs. 1a&b we have plotted the average pulse profiles which were obtained by applying this technique to nine component windows. The average profile obtained from all those pulses is plotted in Figs. 1c&d, which clearly shows the presence of 9 emission components (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX) in PSR B0329+54. The components on trailing side of the profile are closely spaced compared to the leading side. 1 2 Gangadhara, Gupta and Lorimer

Absolute Broadband Polarization Behaviour of PSR B0329+54: A Glimpse of the Core Emission Process
In this paper we report multifrequency single pulse polarization observations of the PSR B0329+54 normal mode using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope at 325 and 610 MHz and the Effelsberg Observatory at 2695 MHz. Our observations show that towards the central part of the polarization position-angle traverse there is an unusual “arc”-like structure, which is comprised of a broadband “kink” and...
متن کاملSimultaneous single-pulse observations of radio pulsars
In this paper we demonstrate that a large, unexplored reservoir of information about pulsar emission exists, that is directly linked to the radiating particles and their radiation process: We present a study of flux density measurements of individual pulses simultaneously observed at four different frequencies. Correcting for effects caused by the interstellar medium, we derive intrinsic flux d...
متن کاملPulsar Parallaxes at 5 Ghz with the Very Long Baseline Array
We present the first pulsar parallaxes measured with phase-referenced pulsar VLBI observations at 5 GHz. Due to the steep spectra of pulsars, previous astrometric measurements have been at lower frequencies. However, the strongest pulsars can be observed at 5 GHz, offering the benefit of lower combined ionospheric and tropospheric phase errors, which usually limit VLBI astrometric accuracy. The...
متن کامل1 Frequency dependence of pulsar radiation patterns
We report on new results from simultaneous, dual frequency, single pulse observations of PSR B0329+54 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We find that the longitude separation of subpulses at two different frequencies (238 and 612 MHz) is less than that for the corresponding components in the average profile. A similar behaviour has been noticed before in a number of pulsars. We argue th...
متن کاملInfluence of Rotation on Pulsar Radiation Characteristics
We present a relativistic model for pulsar radio emission by including the effect of rotation on coherent curvature radiation by bunches. We find that rotation broadens the width of leading component compared to the width of trailing component. We estimate the component widths in the average pulse profiles of about 24 pulsars, and find that 19 of them have a broader leading component. We explai...
