Aspects of ruminant intermediary metabolism in relation to ketosis.

چکیده
Both the cow and the sheep are susceptible to ketosis. In the cow the clinical condition is termed primary spontaneous bovine ketosis and in the sheep, pregnancy toxaemia. Bovine ketosis occurs typically in the third to eighth week of lactation in mature heavily lactating diary cows. Pregnancy toxaemia occufs in late pregnancy in ewes bearing two or more lambs. Both conditions are associated with hyperketonaemia, hypoglycaemia and developing inappetence (loss of appetite). The susceptibility to ketosis of these two ruminant species is doubtless due in part to their reliance on gluconeogenesis for their glucose supply. A further factor is that these animals have been bred for high productivity (i.e. of milk and of offspring in cows and sheep respectively) and this inbred productivity may overtax an animal’s metabolic resources. Many of the biochemical characteristics of the spontaneous condition can be elicited by subjecting cows in early lactation on the one hand, and multifoetate ewes on the other, to food deprivation. Data from food-deprivation ketosis in both species will be included below. The present review will deal mainly with the cow, but data from the sheep will be included as necessary. Other reviews on ruminant ketosis have been written (Eergman, 1971 ; Baird et al., 1974a,b; Schultz, 1974).

Whether or not, as Pope said, "the proper study of mankind is man," the egocentricity and introspective preoccupation of genus homo has made this study his favorite indoor sport. Although he is as filled with general insatiable curiosity as Kipling's elephant child, this self-preoccupation has tended to orient this curiosity in the direction of his own experiences and especially towards the esc...
متن کاملBovine serum lipids. II. Lipoprotein quantitative and qualitative composition as influenced by added animal fat diets.
S ERUM lipoproteins have been studied in some detail in relation to certain disease conditions and metabolic disorders of man. However, very limited research has been conducted on the lipoproteins of ruminant animals. Current research in ruminant nutrition and metabolism has focused more attention on lipid utilization and its interactions with proteins in the serum. Researchers (Evans, Patton a...
متن کاملMicrowave irradiation of whole soybeans in ruminant nutrition: Protein and carbohydrate metabolism in vitro and in situ
Whole soybeans serve as one of the main sources of protein in ruminant nutrition. Different processing methods have been employed for ruminal protein protection. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of microwave irradiation [900 W; 2, 4 and 6 min] on quality, ruminal degradability and estimated in vitro intestinal digestibility of availability soybean crude protein....
متن کاملEffects of starvation on intermediary metabolism in the lactating cow. A comparison with metabolic changes occurring during bovine ketosis.
1. The purpose of this study was to determine the nature of the metabolic changes associated with carbohydrate and fat metabolism that occurred in the blood and liver of lactating dairy cows during starvation for 6 days. 2. During starvation, the blood concentrations of the free fatty acids and ketone bodies increased, whereas that of citrate decreased. After an initial increase, the blood conc...
متن کاملSome Remarks on the Management of Diabetes Mellitus *
The common practice of speaking of the spontaneous diabetes mellitus of man as a disease is not yet and may never be justified. The term is applied to any condition in which the oxidation of carbohydrate is chronically impaired. The process of "oxidation" is specified in order to exclude disturbances of glycogenesis and glycogenolysis that may accompany disorders of the function of the liver, t...
