The Final Approach Spacing Tool
نویسنده
چکیده
A system for assisting terminal area air traffic controllers in the management and control of arrival traffic, referred to as the Final Approach Spacing Tool (FAST), is being developed at NASA Ames Research Center. In a cooperative program, NASA and the FAA have efforts underway to install and evaluate the system at the Dallas/Fort Worth Terminal Radar Approach Control facility beginning in 1994. This paper will review the algorithmic components, the human-machine interface, and the results of recent simulations.

Operational Test Results of the Passive Final Approach Spacing Tool
A prototype decision support tool for terminal area air traffic controllers, referred to as the Final Approach Spacing Tool (FAST), was recently evaluated in operation with live air traffic at the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas Airport. Controllers utilized FAST’s runway and sequence advisories to manage and control arrival traffic during more than twenty-five peak rush traffic periods. This paper pr...
متن کاملWeather Impacted Routes for the Final Approach Spacing Tool (fast)*
This paper addresses the issue of developing weatherimpacted routes for the Final Approach Spacing Tool (FAST). FAST relies on adaptation data that includes nominal terminal area routes and degrees of freedom to generate optimum landing sequences and runway assignments. However, during adverse weather some adapted routes may become unavailable due to the presence of hazardous weather. If FAST c...
متن کاملA Human Factors Evaluation of Active Final Approach Spacing Tool Concepts
This paper summarizes the human factors aspects of the development of an air traffic control decision support tool known as the Active Final Approach Spacing Tool (aFAST). Active FAST will provide heading and speed advisories that will allow Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) air traffic controllers to space aircraft more precisely on final approach. The human factors challenges include t...
متن کاملPaired Approach: a Closely Spaced Parallel Runway Approach Concept
The paired approach procedure is intended to facilitate IFR approaches to closely spaced parallel runways (closer than 2500 feet) and increase runway throughput where parallel ILS approaches cannot be conducted under instrument meteorological conditions. The paired approach procedure requires that air traffic control pair compatible and eligible aircraft and place them on the final approach cou...
متن کاملAutomated Spacing Support Tools for Interval Management Operations during Continuous Descent Approaches
In this study, pilots were asked to achieve a specific time in trail while flying an arrival into Louisville International airport. Weather shortly before the start of the descent added variability to the initial intervals. A spacing tool calculated airspeeds intended to achieve the desired time in trail at the final approach fix. Pilots were exposed to four experimental conditions which varied...
