Efficient Turbulent Compressible Convection in the Deep Stellar Atmosphere

چکیده
This paper reports an application of gas-kinetic BGK scheme to the computation of turbulent compressible convection in the stellar interior. After incorporating the Subgrid Scale (SGS) turbulence model into the BGK scheme, we tested the effects of numerical parameters on the quantitative relationships among the thermodynamic variables, their fluctuations and correlations in a very deep, initially gravity-stratified stellar atmosphere. Comparison indicates that the thermal properties and dynamic properties are dominated by different aspects of numerical models separately. An adjustable Deardorff constant in the SGS model cμ = 0.25 and an amplitude of artificial viscosity in the gas-kinetic BGK scheme C2 = 0 are appropriate for current study. We also calculated the density-weighted autoand cross-correlation functions in Xiong’s (1977) turbulent stellar convection theories based on which the gradient type of models of the non-local transport and the anisotropy of the turbulence are preliminarily studied. No universal relations or constant parameters were found for these models.

3-D Simulations of Turbulent Compressible Convection
Three{dimensional simulations of turbulent and fully compressible thermal convection in deep atmospheres are presented and analyzed in terms of velocity power spectra, mixing{length theory, and production of vorticity. Density contrasts across these convective layers are typically around 11. The uid model is that of an ideal gas with a constant thermal conductivity. The Piecewise-Parabolic Meth...
متن کاملMesoscale flows in large aspect ratio simulations of turbulent compressible convection
We present the results of a very large aspect ratio (A = 42.6) numerical simulation of fully compressible turbulent convection in a polytropic atmosphere, and focus on the properties of large-scale flows. Mesoscale patterns dominate the turbulent energy spectrum. We show that these structures, which had already been observed in Boussinesq simulations by Cattaneo et al. (2001), have a genuine co...

Three-dimensional time dependent numerical simulations of compressible magnetohydrodynamic fluids describing super-Alfvénic, supersonic and strongly magnetized space and laboratory plasmas show a nonlinear relaxation towards a state of near incompressibility. The latter is characterized essentially by a subsonic turbulent Mach number. This transition is mediated dynamically by disparate spectra...
متن کاملThe Spectrum of Steady State Turbulent Convection
Based on Heisenberg's statistical theory of turbulence, a model for steady state turbulent convection is herein proposed, and on the basis of this model, equations for the energy spectrum for steady state turbulent convection are derived. The spectrum is obtained from the solution of a nonlinear integral equation. After the integral equation is brought into a universally valid nondimensional fo...

We perform Large eddy simulations of turbulent compressible convection in stellar-type convection zones by solving the Naviér-Stokes equations in three dimensions. We estimate the extent of penetration into the stable layer above a stellar-type convection zone by varying the rotation rate (Ω), the inclination of the rotation vector (θ) and the relative stability (S) of the upper stable layer Th...
