چکیده

The study of linear algebra has become more and more popular in the last few decades. People are attracted to this subject because of its beauty and its connections with many other pure and applied areas. In theoretical development of the subject as well as in many applications, one often needs to measure the “length” of vectors. For this purpose, norm functions are considered on a vector space. In this expository article, we explain why one would want to study different kinds of norms on a real vector space. We then focus on the problem of how to identify different norms using linear isomorphisms with particular attention to a group theory method used by several authors recently. One may view the first half of this article as a gentle introduction to the theory of norms and the second half as an illustration of how group theory can be applied to questions in linear algebra.

Algebraic Reflexivity of Isometry Groups and Automorphism Groups of Some Operator Structures

We establish the algebraic reflexivity of three isometry groups of operator structures: The group of all surjective isometries on the unitary group, the group of all surjective isometries on the set of all positive invertible operators equipped with the Thompson metric, and the group of all surjective isometries on the general linear group of B(H), the operator algebra over a complex infinite d...

Surjective Real-Linear Uniform Isometries Between Complex Function Algebras

In this paper, we first give a description of a surjective unit-preserving real-linear uniform isometry $ T : A longrightarrow B$,  where $ A $ and $ B $ are complex function spaces on compact Hausdorff spaces $ X $ and $ Y $, respectively, whenever ${rm ER}left (A, Xright ) = {rm Ch}left (A, Xright )$ and ${rm ER}left (B, Yright ) = {rm Ch}left (B, Yright )$. Next, we give a description of $ T...

Geometry and Dynamics of Discrete Isometry Groups of Higher Rank Symmetric Spaces

For real hyperbolic spaces, the dynamics of individual isometries and the geometry of the limit set of nonelementary discrete isometry groups have been studied in great detail. Most of the results were generalised to discrete isometry groups of simply connected Riemannian manifolds of pinched negative curvature. For symmetric spaces of higher rank, which contain isometrically embedded Euclidean...

Isometries of Cross Products of Sequence Spaces

Let X0, X1, . . . , Xk with k ∈ IN ∪ {∞} be sequence spaces (finite or infinite dimensional) over C or IR with absolute norms Ni for i = 0, . . . , k, (i.e., with 1unconditional bases) such that dimX0 = k. Define an absolute norm on the cross product space (also known as the X0 1-unconditional sum) X1 × · · · ×Xk by N(x1, . . . , xk) = N0(N1(x1), . . . , Nk(xk)) for all (x1, . . . , xk) ∈ X1 × ...

Weak Isometries in Partially Ordered Groups

In this paper the author gives necessary and sufficient conditions under which to a stable weak isometry f in a directed group G there exists a direct decomposition G = A × B of G such that f(x) = x(A) − x(B) for each x ∈ G. Further, some results on weak isometries in partially ordered groups are established. Isometries in an abelian lattice ordered group (l-group) have been introduced and inve...

Reflexivity of the Isometry Group of Some Classical Spaces

We investigate the reflexivity of the isometry group and the automorphism group of some important metric linear spaces and algebras. The paper consists of the following sections: 1. Preliminaries. 2. Sequence spaces. 3. Spaces of measurable functions. 4. Hardy spaces. 5. Banach algebras of holomorphic functions. 6. Fréchet algebras of holomorphic functions. 7. Spaces of continuous functions. In...
