چکیده

The coupled, time-dependent continuity, momentum andenergy equations for fourcharged species (H~, Het Q~and electrons) moving through astationary upper neutral atmosphere (composed of02, N2, 0, He, H) were solved along open geomagnetic field lines using a modified version of the /5/ model. The thermospheric densities and temperatures, obtainedfrom the MSIS-86 model /7/, were used to calculate neutral-ion sources, sinks, and collision frequencies. Thevarious cross sections and conductivities employed by the /5/ model were also updated. The paper presents the first time-dependent solutions for the He’ component of thepolar wind. Special attention is paid to the solar cycle variationof the ion upflows.

On the source regions of the fast solar wind in polar coronal holes

Fast streams of the solar wind with speeds of up to ≈ 800 km s−1 at a distance of 1 AU (astronomical unit) from the Sun are known to originate in solar coronal holes. With the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) detailed studies of the solar wind source regions have been made possible for the first time. We show images of solar polar coronal holes in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), which w...

Preparing the Ground for a Helium-3 Economy from a Polar Lunar

Introduction: Helium-3, deposited by the solar wind in the lunar regolith, may potentially be used as fusion power for terrestrial electricity and deep-space propulsion[1,2]. It could be a key resource in self-sustaining interplanetary economy, since the establishment of controlled d-3 He fusion would endow this resource with a value of roughly $3M/kg, assuming that fuel comprises 20% of the co...

Measurement of the Abundance of Helium-3 in the Sun and in the Local Interstellar Cloud with Swics on Ulysses

The abundance of He in the present day local interstellar cloud (LIC) and in the sun has important implications for the study of galactic evolution and for estimating the production of light nuclei in the early universe. Data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses is used to measure the isotopic ratio of helium (He=He = Γ) both in the solar wind and the local inters...

UWFDM-1109 Dynamics of the Earth-Moon-Sun System and How It Impacts the Solar Wind Implanted Hydrogen Distribution on the Moon

Recent neutron spectrometer measurements by the Lunar Prospector Mission indicate the presence of unexpectedly high concentrations of hydrogen, possibly due to water ice, at the polar regions of the Moon. The objective of the conducted research was to analyze the solarwind-implanted hydrogen on the Moon in order to interpret the Lunar Prospector results. Previous researchers had created a heliu...

Ionization structure in the winds of B [ e ] supergiants I . Ionization equilibrium calculations in a H plus He wind

The non-spherically symmetric winds of B[e] supergiants are investigated. An empirical density distribution is chosen that accounts for the density concentrations and ratios derived from observations, and our model winds are assumed to contain only hydrogen and helium. We first calculate the approximate ionization radii for H and He and compare the results with the ionization fractions calculat...
