Dust-induced Systematic Errors in Ultraviolet-derived Star Formation Rates

چکیده
Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the ‘backbone’ of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. These luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that the tight relationship between the UV spectral slopes (β) and the FUV attenuations (AFUV) of starburst galaxies applies for all starforming galaxies. Data from seven independent UV experiments demonstrates that quiescent, ‘normal’ starforming galaxies deviate substantially from the starburst galaxy β–AFUV correlation, in the sense that normal galaxies are redder than starbursts. Spatially resolved data for the Large Magellanic Cloud suggests that dust geometry and properties, coupled with a small contribution from older stellar populations, cause deviations from the starburst galaxy β–AFUV correlation. Folding in data for starbursts and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, it is clear that neither rest-frame UV-optical colors nor UV/Hα significantly help in constraining the UV attenuation. These results argue that the estimation of SF rates from rest-frame UV and optical data alone is subject to large (factors of at least a few) systematic uncertainties because of dust, which cannot be reliably corrected for using only UV/optical diagnostics. Estimating Star Formation Rates from Infrared and Radio Luminosities: the Origin of the Radio–infrared Correlation
I have assembled a diverse sample of galaxies from the literature with far-ultraviolet (FUV), optical, infrared (IR) and radio luminosities to explore the calibration of radio-derived and IR-derived star formation (SF) rates, and the origin of the radio-IR correlation. By comparing the 8–1000μm IR, which samples dust-reprocessed starlight, with direct stellar FUV emission, I show that the IR tr...

We have used a sample of 43 star-forming galaxies imaged in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) by the UIT supplemented with 33 galaxies observed by FAUST, to explore the consistency of UV and Hα derived star formation rates (SFRs). We find, even before correction for dust, that UV and Hα SFRs are quantitatively consistent for low-luminosity galaxies, and that higher luminosity galaxies have Hα SFRs a fa...
متن کاملThe nearby universe observed in far-infrared and in ultraviolet: an analysis of the dust attenuation and the star formation activity
We discuss the dust attenuation and the star formation rates in the nearby universe obtained from a comparison of far-infrared (IRAS) and ultraviolet (GALEX) observations. The ratio of the dust to UV flux ratio is used to derive the dust attenuation: this dust attenuation is found to increase with the luminosity of the galaxies and from z=0 to z=1. The slope of the UV continuum is found to be a...
متن کاملStar formation history and dust attenuation in galaxies drawn from ultraviolet surveys
We compile a new sample of 115 nearby, non-Seyfert galaxies spanning a wide range of star formation activities, from starburst to nearly dormant, based on ultraviolet observations with various satellites. We combine these observations with infrared observations to study the relation between ratio of total far-infrared to ultraviolet luminosities and ultraviolet spectral slope (the ‘IRX-UV’ rela...

We present the results of a multiwavelength study of nearby galaxies aimed at understanding the relation between the ultraviolet and far-infrared emission in star-forming galaxies. The data set comprises new ultraviolet (from HST STIS), ground-based H , and radio continuum observations, together with archival infrared data (from IRAS and ISO). The local galaxies are used as benchmarks for compa...
