Neuroanatomy: Connectome Connects Fly and Mammalian Brain Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
A recent study shows that brain connectivity in Drosophila melanogaster follows a small-world, modular and rich-club organisation that facilitates information processing. This organisation shows a striking similarity with the mammalian brain.

Q&A: What is the Open Connectome Project?
What is the connectome? Although it has been over a century since neuroscientists first conjectured that networks of neurons comprise the brain, technology has limited high-throughput investigations of neural circuitry until very recently. In the last couple of decades, several experimental paradigms have arisen that are poised to finally begin studying neuroanatomy in a high-throughput fashion...
متن کاملGraph theory analysis of complex brain networks: new concepts in brain mapping applied to neurosurgery.
Neuroanatomy has entered a new era, culminating in the search for the connectome, otherwise known as the brain's wiring diagram. While this approach has led to landmark discoveries in neuroscience, potential neurosurgical applications and collaborations have been lagging. In this article, the authors describe the ideas and concepts behind the connectome and its analysis with graph theory. Follo...
متن کاملAnatomy of attentional networks.
Attention is a central theme in psychological science. As with other biological systems, attention has a distinct anatomy that carries out basic psychological functions. Disparate attentional networks correlate with discrete neural circuitry and can be influenced by specific brain injuries, states, and drugs. Accordingly, thinking about attention as an organ system is advantageous for understan...
متن کاملSimulation of Sparse Random Networks on a Cnaps Simd Neurocomputer
Neurons of the cortical tissue in a mammalian brain are connected in an extremely sparse and random fashion. We use ndings of neuroanatomy to model this special connection scheme and present methods for a parallel simulation of such networks on a digital CNAPS neurocomputer. A considerable speedup in comparison to sequential computation is achieved.
متن کاملNeuroanatomy: Decoding the Fly Brain
Despite their relatively small brains, with only about 100,000 neurons, fruit flies show many complex behaviours. Understanding how these behaviours are generated will require a wiring diagram of the brain, and significant progress is being made towards this goal. One study has labelled 16,000 individual neurons and generated a coarse wiring diagram of the whole fly brain, identifying subnetwor...
