Reionization and decaying dark matter.

چکیده
Gunn-Peterson tests suggest that the Universe was re-ionized after the _tazldard recombination epoch. We present a systematic treatment of the ionization process by deriving the Boltzmann equations appropriate to this regime. A compact solution for the photon spectrum is found in terms of the ionization ratio. These equations are then solved numerically for the Decaying Dark Matter scenario, wherein neutrinos with mass of order 30 eV radiatively decay producing photons which ionize the intergalactic medium. We find that the neutrino mass and lifetime are severely constrained by Gunn-Peterson tests, observations of the diffuse photon spectrum in the ultraviolet regime, and the Hubble parameter.

Impact of dark matter decays and annihilations on reionzation
One of the possible methods to distinguish among various dark matter candidates is to study the effects of dark matter decays. We consider four different dark matter candidates (light dark matter, gravitinos, neutralinos and sterile neutrinos), for each of them deriving the decaying/annihilation rate, the influence on reionization, matter temperature and CMB spectra. We find that light dark mat...

متن کاملDo We Need Stars to Reionize the Universe at High Redshifts? Early Reionization by Decaying Heavy Sterile Neutrinos
A remarkable result of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations is that the universe was significantly reionized at large redshifts. The standard explanation is that massive stars formed early and reionized the universe around redshift z ≈ 17. Here we explore an alternative possibility, in which the universe was reionized in two steps. An early boost of reionization is provi...
متن کاملConstraining dark matter through 21 cm observations
Beyond reionization epoch cosmic hydrogen is neutral and can be directly observed through its 21 cm line signal. If dark matter (DM) decays or annihilates the corresponding energy input affects the hydrogen kinetic temperature and ionized fraction, and contributes to the Lyα background. The changes induced by these processes on the 21 cm signal can then be used to constrain the proposed DM cand...
متن کاملBackground radiation from sterile neutrino decay and reionization
Sterile neutrinos are one of the most promising Warm Dark Matter candidates. By considering their radiativeand pion-decay channels, we derive the allowed contribution of sterile neutrinos to the X-ray, optical and near-infrared cosmic backgrounds. The X-ray background puts a strong constraint on the mass of radiatively decaying neutrinos (mνs < ∼ 14 keV), whereas the allowed mass range for pion...
