INVITED COMMENTARY Invited Commentary: Time to Move Breast Cancer Chemoprevention to Center Stage
نویسنده
چکیده
Breast cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosedworldwide. There is substantial evidence that 5 years of treatment with chemopreventive agents, such as tamoxifen, raloxifene, and exemestane, can reduce the incidence of hormone-positive cancers in high-risk women. Nevertheless, the uptake of these agents has been poor, even in women with atypical hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) where the greatest benefit has been seen. There is a need for novel approaches to ensure that chemoprevention is offered to women at high risk. Less toxic agents are for women at modest risk and to prevent hormone receptor-negative cancer.

Invited commentary: Observational research in the age of the electronic health record.
Historically, clinical epidemiologic research has been constrained by the costs and time associated with manually identifying cases and abstracting clinical data. In this issue, Carrell et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2014;179(6);749-758) report on their impressive success using natural language processing techniques to correctly identify cases of cancer recurrence among women with previous breast canc...

A large literature has developed over the last two decades around methods for evaluating the effects and benefits of screening procedures for cancer. In contrast, the role of screening for cancer as a nuisance variable is one that has as yet received little attention. This is unfortunate, because, as Noel Weiss points out in the lead commentary in this issue of the Journal (1), screening proced...

In this issue of the Journal, Parent et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2012;176(9):751–759) report significant associations between night-shift work and risk of cancer at several sites among men. These findings not only address the need for shift-work studies that evaluate cancers other than breast and prostate cancer but also support the increasing concern that the negative effects of shift work may be ...
