چکیده

Exposure to extreme heat is an important cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. The elevation of temperatures and increases in extended periods of high temperatures due to climate change means that heat exposure as a health concern will increase. Thus, methodologies that researchers and practitioners can use to assess heat exposure among various population groups will become increasingly important. Human exposure to heat can be measured by wearable sensors and the maintenance of activity logs of a sample of individuals over the course of their daily activities. We introduce an alternative methodology that we believe offers great promise for evaluating heat exposure of the entire population of a city, region or state. Microsimulation modeling of the daily activity patterns of a synthetic population for the state of Alabama demonstrates the efficacy of this approach in measuring “potential” heat exposure, and in evaluating the significance of demographic attributes, in this case household income, that correlate with different exposure levels.

Validating a dynamic population microsimulation model: Recent experience in Australia

Available published research on microsimulation tends to focus on the results of policy simulations rather than upon validation of the models and their outputs. Dynamic population microsimulation models, which age an entire population through time for some decades, create particular validation challenges. This article outlines some of the issues that arise when attempting to validate dynamic po...

The Life-Cycle Income Analysis Model (LIAM): A Study of a Flexible Dynamic Microsimulation Modelling Computing Framework

This paper describes a flexible computing framework designed to create a dynamic microsimulation model, the Life-cycle Income Analysis Model (LIAM). The principle computing characteristics include the degree of modularisation, parameterisation, generalisation and robustness. The paper describes the decisions taken with regard to type of dynamic model used. The LIAM framework has been used to cr...

Supporting Pension Pre-Calculation With Dynamic Microsimulation Technologies

Population ageing induces many challenges in the pension system of developed countries. It is necessary to support the decision-making processes regarding these challenges by forecasting different future scenarios. Long-term forecasts are required to understand the development process of the population and the pension system. The microsimulation approach has many benefits over other forecasting...

The MicSim Package of R: An Entry-Level Toolkit for Continuous-Time Microsimulation

High entry barriers might discourage many social scientists from using existing microsimulation software. This article presents the functionality and capabilities of the free and open source R package MicSim which allows performing continuous-time microsimulation at a very fine-grained level from a low level entry point. Hence, the package might also be of interest to people who are new to R. T...

Bayesian Calibration of Microsimulation Models.

Microsimulation models that describe disease processes synthesize information from multiple sources and can be used to estimate the effects of screening and treatment on cancer incidence and mortality at a population level. These models are characterized by simulation of individual event histories for an idealized population of interest. Microsimulation models are complex and invariably include...
