Complexity Results for Modal Dependence Logic

چکیده
Modal dependence logic was introduced recently by Väänänen. It enhances the basic modal language by an operator =(). For propositional variables p1, . . . , pn, =(p1, . . . , pn−1, pn) intuitively states that the value of pn is determined by those of p1, . . . , pn−1. Sevenster (J. Logic and Computation, 2009) showed that satisfiability for modal dependence logic is complete for nondeterministic exponential time. In this paper we consider fragments of modal dependence logic obtained by restricting the set of allowed propositional connectives. We show that satisfibility for poor man’s dependence logic, the language consisting of formulas built from literals and dependence atoms using ∧, , ♦ (i. e., disallowing disjunction), remains NEXPTIME-complete. If we only allow monotone formulas (without negation, but with disjunction), the complexity drops to PSPACE-completeness. We also extend Väänänen’s language by allowing classical disjunction besides dependence disjunction and show that the satisfiability problem remains NEXPTIME-complete. If we then disallow both negation and dependence disjunction, satistiability is complete for the second level of the polynomial hierarchy. Additionally we consider the restriction of modal dependence logic where the length of each single dependence atom is bounded by a number that is fixed for the whole logic. We show that the satisfiability problem for this bounded arity dependence logic is PSPACE-complete and that the complexity drops to the third level of the polynomial hierarchy if we then disallow disjunction. In this way we completely classifiy the computational complexity of the satisfiability problem for all restrictions of propositional and dependence operators considered by Väänänen and Sevenster. A short version of this was presented at CSL 2010 [LV10].

The Entailment Problem in Modal and Propositional Dependence Logics
We examine the entailment problem for different modal and propositional dependence logics defined in terms of dependence, independence, or inclusion atoms. We establish numerous new complexity results, and settle a long-standing open question by showing that the validity problem for modal dependence logic is NEXPTIME-complete.
متن کاملModel Checking for Modal Dependence Logic: An Approach through Post's Lattice
In this paper we investigate an extended version of modal dependence logic by allowing arbitrary Boolean connectives. Modal dependence logic was recently introduced by Jouko Väänänen by extending modal logic by a the dependence atom dep(·). In this paper we study the computational complexity of the model checking problem. For a complete classification of arbitrary Boolean functions we are using...

In this thesis (modal) dependence logic is investigated. It was introduced in 2007 by Jouko Väänänen as an extension of first-order (resp. modal) logic by the dependence operator “p ̈q. For first-order (resp. propositional) variables x1, . . . , xn, “px1, . . . , xn ́1, xnq intuitively states that the value of xn is determined by those of x1, . . . , xn ́1. We consider fragments of modal dependenc...
متن کاملComplexity of Model Checking for Modal Dependence Logic
Modal dependence logic (MDL) was introduced recently by Väänänen. It enhances the basic modal language by an operator =(·). For propositional variables p1, . . . , pn the atomic formula =(p1, . . . , pn−1, pn) intuitively states that the value of pn is determined solely by those of p1, . . . , pn−1. We show that model checking for MDL formulae over Kripke structures is NPcomplete and further co...
متن کاملModal Independence Logic
This paper introduces modal independence logic MIL, a modal logic that can explicitly talk about independence among propositional variables. Formulas of MIL are not evaluated in worlds but in sets of worlds, so called teams. In this vein, MIL can be seen as a variant of Väänänen’s modal dependence logic MDL. We show that MIL embeds MDL and is strictly more expressive. However, on singleton team...
