Commentary. An outbreak of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis following consumption of oysters.

چکیده

While the only laboratory evidence for Norwalk virus infection was a positive PCR result from a single stool, the symptom profile, incubation period, and duration of illness are entirely consistent with previous outbreaks of Norwalk virus infection. In similar outbreaks where the symptoms, incubation period, and duration of illness suggest a viral aetiology, RT-PCR, as used in this investigation could be increasingly utilized. This technique is estimated to detect as little as 10 to 1,000 Norwalk virus particles per millilitre of stool compared to a lower level of detection of 10 to10 particles per millilitre of stool by electron microscopy.

An outbreak of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis following consumption of oysters.

In August 1996, an outbreak of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis occurred among south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales residents over a four week period. Ninety-two of the 97 cases detected were confirmed as having consumed raw oysters within three days prior to developing the illness. No other food items or beverages were significantly associated with the illness. Environmental investi...

A norovirus outbreak associated with consumption of NSW oysters: implications for quality assurance systems.

Norovirus is a common cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks associated with raw shellfish consumption. In Australia there have been several reports of norovirus outbreaks associated with oysters despite the application of regulatory measures recommended by Food Standards Australia New Zealand. This study describes an outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis following the consumption of New South Wale...

Noroviruses associated with acute gastroenteritis in a children's day care facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Noroviruses (Norwalk-like viruses) are an important cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. They are the most common cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the adult population and occur in nursing homes for the elderly, geriatric wards, medical wards, and in hotel and restaurant settings. Food-borne outbreaks have also occurred following consumption of contaminated oysters. This study describes ...

Development of a reverse transcription-PCR-DNA enzyme immunoassay for detection of "Norwalk-like" viruses and hepatitis A virus in stool and shellfish.

Outbreaks of food- and waterborne gastroenteritis are being increasingly reported throughout the world. The analysis of environmental samples by newer diagnostic techniques such as reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) amplification of nucleic acid has begun to identify human enteric viruses (predominantly "Norwalk-like" viruses [NLVs]) as the cause of many of these outbreaks. To streamline NLV de...

Detection of norwalk-like virus in shellfish implicated in illness.

In the 1990s, Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) were identified in patient specimens as the primary pathogen associated with shellfish-borne gastroenteritis in the United States. Identification of these viruses from implicated shellfish has been difficult due to inefficient recovery of viruses, natural polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitors in shellfish, and low virus contamination. Recent improv...
