چکیده

We have succeeded in obtaining exact configurations of irrotational binary systems for compressible (polytropic) equations of state. Our models correspond to binaries of equal mass neutron star systems in the viscosity free limit. By using the obtained sequences of stationary states, the evolution of binary systems of irrotational neutron stars due to gravitational wave emission has been examined. For inviscid binary systems the spin angular velocity of each component in a detached phase is smaller than the orbital angular velocity at a contact phase. Thus the irrotational approximation during evolution of binary neutron stars due to gravitational wave emission can be justified. Our computational results show that the binary will never reach a dynamically unstable state before a contact phase even for rather stiff polytropes with the index N > ∼ 0.7, as the separation of two components decreases due to gravitational wave emission. This conclusion is different from that of Lai, Rasio & Shapiro who employed approximate solutions for polytropic binary systems.

R-Mode Oscillations and Spindown of Young Rotating Magnetic Neutron Stars

Recent work has shown that a young, rapidly rotating neutron star loses angular momentum to gravitational waves generated by unstable r-mode oscillations. We study the spin evolution of a young, magnetic neutron star including both the effects of gravitational radiation and magnetic braking (modeled as magnetic dipole radiation). Our phenomenological description of nonlinear r-modes is similar ...

Prospects for the Detection of Electromagnetic Counterparts to Gravitational Wave Events

Various models for electromagnetic emissions correlated with the gravitational wave signals expected to be detectable by the current and planned gravitational wave detectors are studied. The position error on the location of a gravitational wave source is estimated, and is used to show that it could be possible to observe the electromagnetic counterparts to neutron star-neutron star or neutron ...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

The Probability Distribution of Binary Pulsar Coalescence Rate Estimates. Ii. Neutron Star–white Dwarf Binaries

We consider the statistics of pulsar binaries with white dwarf companions (NS−WD). Using the statistical analysis method developed by Kim et al. (2003) we calculate the Galactic coalescence rate of NS−WD binaries due to gravitational-wave emission. We find that the most likely values for the total Galactic coalescence rate (Rtot) of NS−WD binaries lie in the range 0.2–10 Myr depending on differ...

Gravitational Radiation Evolution of Accreting Neutron Stars

The gravitational-wave and accretion driven evolution of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries and similar systems is analyzed, while the amplitude of the radiating perturbation (here assumed to be an r-mode) remains small. If most of the star is superfluid, with (temperature independent) mutual friction dominating the ordinary (temperature dependent) shear viscosity, the amplitude of the mo...
