Colonic Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma Presented as Multiple Polyposis at Colonoscopy in a Nigerian Man: Case Report of a Rare Occurrence and Brief Review of Literature

چکیده
Anatomically, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) is found in various parts of the body. In the colon, lymphoid tissue occurs mainly as isolated lymphoid follicles that are composed mainly of B lymphocytes. Such gastrointestinal tract MALT plays an important role in immune surveillance and mucosal regeneration, but the cells inMALTmayoccasionally undergo abnormal proliferation and give rise to lymphoma of the MALT type. The World Health Organization identifies these lesions of non-Hodgkin lymphoma as being of B-cell origin and classifies them as extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the MALT type. In 1983, Isaacson and Wright were the first to describe the term MALT lymphoma. In the gastrointestinal tract, the most common site of occurrence is the stomach and small intestine; only rarely does MALT occur in the colon. To put its rarity in context, all colonic lymphomas account for approximately 0.2% to 0.6% of colorectal malignant tumors and only 2.5% of all lymphomas. Among the lymphomas seen in the colon, the most common type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and MALT-type lymphoma accounts for , 20% of cases in this subgroup.

BACKGROUND Colonic lymphoma is an uncommon presentation of extranodal lymphoma. Colonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma is a different entity from gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and very rare. The presentation and management of colonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue are highly variable in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 59-year-old ...

متن کاملMucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) Lymphoma of the Colon: A Case Report and a Literature Review
BACKGROUND Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a well-known hematologic malignancy. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most commonly involved extra nodal site. MALT lymphomas are uncommon, accounting for 5% of all NHL. Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is the prototype seen in association with Helicobacter pylori. Colonic MALT lymphoma is rare and comprises only 2.5% of th...
متن کاملA Case of Multiple Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) Lymphoma of the Colon Identified as Simple Mucosal Discoloration
Most colonic multiple mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are confirmed with a histologic and immunohistochemical staining of the mucosal biopsy specimen obtained during colonoscopic examinations. Endoscopically, colonic MALT lymphomas frequently appear as protruding and/or ulcerative lesions, and there are not so many reports of colonic MALT lymphoma as compared to the frequent ...
متن کاملA Case of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma of the Sigmoid Colon Presenting as a Semipedunculated Polyp
Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are characterized by lymphoepithelial lesions pathologically. Colonic MALT lymphomas are relatively rarer than lymphomas of the stomach or small intestine. Endoscopically, colonic MALT lymphoma frequently appears as a nonpedunculated protruding polypoid mass and/or an ulceration in the cecum and/or rectum. We report a unique case of a colonic M...
