Affective Neuroscience: Food ‘Wanting’ Hotspot in Dorsal Striatum
نویسنده
چکیده
New research has uncovered a micro-domain within dorsal neostriatum where enkephalin surges are triggered by the opportunity to consume tasty foods and where μ-opioid microinjections generate intense motivational 'wanting' to eat without enhancing food 'liking'.

Opioid hedonic hotspot in nucleus accumbens shell: mu, delta, and kappa maps for enhancement of sweetness "liking" and "wanting".
A specialized cubic-millimeter hotspot in the rostrodorsal quadrant of medial shell in nucleus accumbens (NAc) of rats may mediate opioid enhancement of gustatory hedonic impact or "liking". Here, we selectively stimulated the three major subtypes of opioid receptors via agonist microinjections [mu (DAMGO), delta (DPDPE), or kappa (U50488H)] and constructed anatomical maps for functional locali...
متن کاملReward for food odors: an fMRI study of liking and wanting as a function of metabolic state and BMI.
Brain reward systems mediate liking and wanting for food reward. Here, we explore the differential involvement of the following structures for these two components: the ventral and dorsal striatopallidal area, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), anterior insula and anterior cingulate. Twelve healthy female participants were asked to rate pleasantness (liking of food and non-food odors) and the desire t...
متن کاملOpioid limbic circuit for reward: interaction between hedonic hotspots of nucleus accumbens and ventral pallidum.
Mu-opioid stimulation of cubic millimeter hedonic hotspots in either the nucleus accumbens shell (NAc) or the ventral pallidum (VP) amplifies hedonic "liking" reactions to sweetness and appetitive "wanting" for food reward. How do these two NAc-VP hotspots interact? To probe their interaction and limbic circuit properties, we assessed whether opioid activation of one hotspot recruited the other...
متن کاملCocaine self-administration produces a progressive involvement of limbic, association, and sensorimotor striatal domains.
The primate striatum is composed of limbic, cognitive, and sensorimotor functional domains. Although the effects of cocaine have generally been associated with the ventral striatum, or limbic domain, recent evidence in rodents suggests the involvement of the dorsal striatum (cognitive and sensorimotor domains) in cocaine self-administration. The goals of the present studies were to map the topo...
متن کاملDorsal striatum responses to reward and punishment: effects of valence and magnitude manipulations.
The goal of this research was to further our understanding of how the striatum responds to the delivery of affective feedback. Previously, we had found that the striatum showed a pattern of sustained activation after presentation of a monetary reward, in contrast to a decrease in the hemodynamic response after a punishment. In this study, we tested whether the activity of the striatum could be ...
