Phonetic Detail in Phonology: Evidence from assimilation and coarticulation

چکیده
Assimilation and coarticulation both involve extending the duration of some property or feature. The similarities between these phenomena can be seen by comparing Basque vowel raising with vowel -to -vowel coarticulation in a language like English. In Basque the low vowel Ial is raised to [el following a high vowel. This gives rise to alternations in the form of the definite suffix, I -a/ (de Rijk 1970):

Phonetic Detail in Phonology: Towards a unified account of assimilation and coarticulation

متن کاملThe Interaction between Contrast , Prosody , and
Russian maintains a contrast between non-palatalized and palatalized trills that has been lost in most Slavic languages. This research investigates the phonetic expression of this contrast in an attempt to understand how the contrast is maintained. One hypothesis is that the contrast is stabilized through resistance to coarticulation between the trill and surrounding vowels and prosodic positio...

Conklin, Jenna T. M.A., Purdue University, May 2015. The Interaction of Gradient and Categorical Processes of Long-Distance Vowel-to-Vowel Assimilation in Kazan Tatar. Major Professor: Dr. Mary Niepokuj. Vowel harmony and vowel-to-vowel coarticulation are long-distance assimilatory processes wherein certain vowels trigger systematic changes in adjacent vowels; harmony effects phonological chang...
متن کاملTitle: Phonetic Variation in Slovak Yer and Non-yer Vowels
We examine the phonetic characteristics of yer and non-yer vowels in Slovak in an effort to improve our understanding of the link between phonological differences and their phonetic realizations. We test the wide-spread assumption of phonological analyses that yer vowels are phonetically identical to their non-yer counterparts with measures of vowel duration, vowel quality and the patterns of c...
متن کاملEvolutionary Phonology and The Life Cycle of Voiceless
In this chapter I examine the phonetic origins of voiceless sonorants cross-linguistically within the general framework of Evolutionary Phonology (Blevins 2004, 2006, 2008b, 2014). In terms of a general hierarchy of contrast, we observe that: voiceless obstruents are common; voiceless sonorant consonants are uncommon; voiceless vowels are extremely rare. One phonetic source of voiceless sonoran...
