Predicting U.S. Recessions: Financial Variables as Leading Indicators
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines the out-of-sample performance of various financial variables as predictors of U.S. recessions. Series such as interest rates and spreads, stock prices, and monetary aggregates are evaluated individually and in comparison with other financial and nonfinancial indicators. The analysis focuses on out-of-sample performance from one to eight quarters ahead. Results show that stock prices are useful with oneto three-quarter horizons, as are some well-known macroeconomic indicators. Beyond one quarter, however, the slope of the yield curve emerges as the clear individual choice and typically performs better by itself out of sample than in conjunction with other variables.

Forecasting U.S. Recessions with Macro Factors
Dynamic latent factors estimated from panels of macroeconomic indicators are used to predict future NBER recession dates. Three monthly macro factors are considered: (1) a bond and exchange rates factor extracted from 22 financial time series; (2) a stock market factor extracted from 4 stock market indicators; (3) a real factor extracted from 4 macroeconomic time series. Three main results emer...
متن کاملDoes the Term Structure Predict Recessions? the International Evidence
Following Estrella and Hardouvelis (1991) and Estrella and Mishkin (1995a, b), we study the ability of the term structure to predict recessions in eight countries. The results are fourfold. First, the yield curve provides information about the likelihood of future recessions in all countries. Second, term spreads are useful for predicting recessions as much as two years ahead. Third, while Germ...
متن کاملThe Yield Curve as a Predictor of U.S. Recessions
Economists often use complex mathematical models to forecast the path of the U.S. economy and the likelihood of recession. But simpler indicators such as interest rates, stock price indexes, and monetary aggregates also contain information about future economic activity. In this edition of Current Issues, we examine the usefulness of one such indicator—the yield curve or, more specifically, the...
متن کاملTechnical Analysis and the Real Economy: Is there a Link?
This paper demonstrates that a significant link exists between the real economy and financial conditions proxied by technical indicators. We show that technical indicators distill the high frequency information of asset prices into useful signals of future economic activity. In-sample and out-of-sample results reveal that technical indicators forecast coincident indicators as well as the Confer...

This paper investigates the strengths and weaknesses of defensive equity investing by focusing on the historical performance of defensive sectors during two periods: U.S. equity bear mar...
