Survey Evidence on Conditional Norm Enforcement
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss survey evidence on individuals’ willingness to sanction norm violations – such as evading taxes, drunk driving, fare dodging, or skiving off work – by expressing disapproval or social exclusion. Our data suggest that people condition their sanctioning behavior on their belief about the frequency of norm violations. The more commonly a norm violation is believed to occur, the lower the individuals’ inclination to punish it. Based on an instrumental variable approach, we demonstrate that this pattern reflects a causal relationship. JEL classification: K42; Z13; D1

Order With Some Law: Complementarity VS. Substitution of Formal and Informal Arrangements
While some argue that incomplete incentive contracts facilitate the self-enforcement of informal dealings, other authors submit that they substitute for or “crowd out” social norms supporting informal arrangements. We use experimental evidence to test these theories by manipulating the extent to which individuals transact repeatedly and the level of contract costs. We find that, by enforcing co...

In her book, Horne develops a theory of norm enforcement. Norms are fundamental to explain social order. Norm enforcement has been studied in many ways in the social sciences. However, Horne adds a truly unique approach. She links norm enforcement with social interdependence by asking how norm enforcement relates to the social relations people have with each other. She defines interdependence a...

متن کاملUsage Control Enforcement - A Survey
Sharing information allows businesses to take advantage of hidden knowledge, improve work processes and cooperation both within and across organisations. Thus there is a need for improved information protection capable of restricting how information is used, as opposed to only accessed. Usage Control has been proposed to achieve this by combining and extending traditional access control, Digita...
متن کاملFrom imitation to implementation: How two- and three-year-old children learn to enforce social norms.
Young children enforce social norms from early on, but little research has examined how this enforcement behaviour emerges. This study investigated whether observing an adult's norm enforcement influences children's own enforcement of that norm compared with observing an action demonstration without enforcement. Additionally, children experienced enforcement either following their own (second-p...
