چکیده

We investigate the behavior of randomized simplex algorithms on special linear programs. For this, we develop combinatorial models for the Klee-Minty cubes [17] and similar linear programs with exponential decreasing paths. The analysis of two most natural randomized pivot rules on the Klee-Minty cubes leads t o (nearly) quadratic lower bounds for the complexity of linear programming with random pivots. Thus we disprove two bounds conjectured in the literature. At the same time, we establish quadratic upper bounds for random pivots on the linear programs under investigation. This motivates the question whether some randomized pivot rules possibly have quadratic worst-case behavior on general linear programs.

An Improved Simplex-Genetic Method to Solve Hard Linear Programming Problems

Linear programming (LP) is an important field of optimization. Even though, interior point methods are polynomial algorithms, many LP practical problems are solved more efficiently by the primal and dual revised simplex methods (RSM); however, RSM has a poor performance in hard LP problems (HLPP) as in the Klee-Minty Cubes problem. Among LP methods, the hybrid method known as Simplex-Genetic (S...

In defense of the Simplex Algorithm's worst-case behavior

In the early 1970s, by work of Klee and Minty (1972) and Zadeh (1973), the Simplex Method, the Network Simplex Method, and the Successive Shortest Path Algorithm have been proved guilty of exponential worst-case behavior (for certain pivot rules). Since then, the common perception is that these algorithms can be fooled into investing senseless effort by ‘bad instances’ such as, e. g., Klee-Mint...

A Simplex-Genetic method for solving the Klee-Minty cube

Although the Simplex Method (SM) developed for Dantzig is efficient for solving many linear programming problems (LPs), there are constructions of hard linear programs as the Klee-Minty cubes and another deformed products, where this method has an exponential behavior. This work presents the integration of genetic algorithms (GA) and SM to fastly reach the optimum of this type of problems. This...

A New Approach to Strongly Polynomial Linear Programming

We present an affine-invariant approach for solving linear programs. Unlike previous approaches, the potential strong polynomiality of the new approach does not require that graphs of polytopes have polynomial diameter (the Hirsch conjecture or weaker versions). We prove that two natural realizations of the approach work efficiently for deformed products [1], a class of polytopes that generaliz...
