Diffuso-mechanical coupling in cholesteric liquid crystals

چکیده
2014 It has been observed that in cholesterics shear flow induces a transverse drift of small particles suspended in the liquid crystal. Quantitative measurements of the drift velocity are presented. The effect is interpreted using the analogy of the thermomechanical coupling, predicted for cholesterics. J. Theory of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals.
A mean field theory is presented to describe cholesteric phases in mixtures of a polymer and a cholesteric liquid crystal. Taking into account an anisotropic coupling between a polymer and a liquid crystal, we examine the helical pitch, twist elastic constant, and phase separations. Analytical expressions of the helical pitch of a cholesteric phase and the twist elastic constant are derived as ...
متن کاملGeneralization of Meyer’s ferroelectricity to cholesteric phase : electroclinic coupling and prediction of a new ferrocholesteric phase
We present a generalization of Meyer's theory of the trilinear coupling between the smectic layers, the tilt angle of the optical axis with respect to the layer normal and the electric polarization which accounts for the spontaneous ferroelectricity in smectic C* liquid crystals. This coupling allows for the description of the electroclinic effect, I-ethe appearance of a polarization and a tilt...
متن کاملChiral Optical Tamm States: Temporal Coupled-Mode Theory
The chiral optical Tamm state (COTS) is a special localized state at the interface of a handedness-preserving mirror and a structurally chiral medium such as a cholesteric liquid crystal or a chiral sculptured thin film. The spectral behavior of COTS, observed as reflection resonances, is described by the temporal coupled-mode theory. Mode coupling is different for two circular light polarizati...
متن کاملParticle-stabilized defect gel in cholesteric liquid crystals
Dispersions of colloidal particles in cholesteric liquid crystals form an unusual solid by stabilizing a network of linear defects under tension in the ideal layered structure of the cholesteric. The large length scales of the cholesteric liquid crystals allowed direct observation of the network structure, and its properties were correlated with rheological measurements of elasticity. This syst...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulation of thermomechanical coupling in a cholesteric liquid crystal model based on the Gay-Berne potential
In 1900 Otto Lehmann found that a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) subjected to a temperature gradient parallel to the cholesteric axis started rotating [1]. This phenomenon, thermomechanical coupling, was explained by Leslie in 1968 [2], who regarded it as a linear transport process, where a temperature gradient parallel to the cholesteric axis in addition to driving a heat flow also induces a...
