چکیده

We present a measure for characterizing statistical relationships between two time sequences. In contrast to commonly used measures like cross-correlations, coherence and mutual information, the proposed measure is non-symmetric and provides information about the direction of interdependence. It is closely related to recent attempts to detect generalized synchronization. However, we do not assume a strict functional relationship between the two time sequences and try to define the measure so as to be robust against noise, and to detect also weak interdependences. We apply our measure to intracranially recorded electroencephalograms of patients suffering from severe epilepsies. PACS numbers: 05.45.+b 87.22.-q 87.22.Jb

Early seizure detection.

For patients with medically intractable epilepsy, there have been few effective alternatives to resective surgery, a destructive, irreversible treatment. A strategy receiving increased attention is using interictal spike patterns and continuous EEG measurements from epileptic patients to predict and ultimately control seizure activity via chemical or electrical control systems. This work compar...

Application of a multivariate seizure detection and prediction method to non-invasive and intracranial long-term EEG recordings.

OBJECTIVE Retrospective evaluation and comparison of performances of a multivariate method for seizure detection and prediction on simultaneous long-term EEG recordings from scalp and intracranial electrodes. METHODS Two multivariate techniques based on simulated leaky integrate-and-fire neurons were investigated in order to detect and predict seizures. Both methods were applied and assessed ...

Very slow EEG responses lateralize temporal lobe seizures: an evaluation of non-invasive DC-EEG.

BACKGROUND This study tested the idea that very slow EEG responses (direct current [DC] potential shifts) could be detected noninvasively during temporal lobe (TL) seizures, and that these shifts give lateralizing information consistent with that obtained by other methods. METHODS Seven patients with TL epilepsy (TLE) were recorded with scalp DC-EEG technique at bedside. All recordings were p...

Classification of EEG Signals for Discrimination of Two Imagined Words

In this study, a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) in Silent-Talk application was implemented. The goal was an electroencephalograph (EEG) classifier for three different classes including two imagined words (Man and Red) and the silence. During the experiment, subjects were requested to silently repeat one of the two words or do nothing in a pre-selected random order. EEG signals were recorded by ...

A Novel Method for Detection of Epilepsy in Short and Noisy EEG Signals Using Ordinal Pattern Analysis

Introduction: In this paper, a novel complexity measure is proposed to detect dynamical changes in nonlinear systems using ordinal pattern analysis of time series data taken from the system. Epilepsy is considered as a dynamical change in nonlinear and complex brain system. The ability of the proposed measure for characterizing the normal and epileptic EEG signals when the signal is short or is...
