چکیده

This paper presents the first dissociative recombination (DR) measurement of electrons with rotationally and vibrationally cold H3 + ions. A dc discharge pinhole supersonic jet source was developed and characterized using infrared cavity ringdown spectroscopy before installation on the CRYRING ion storage ring for the DR measurements. Rotational state distributions sTrot,30 Kd produced using the source were comparable to those in the diffuse interstellar medium. Our measurement of the electron energy dependence of the DR cross section showed resonances not clearly seen in experiments using rotationally hot ions, and allowed calculation of the thermal DR rate coefficient for ions at interstellar temperatures, aDRs23 Kd=2.6310−7 cm3 s−1. This value is in general agreement with recent theoretical predictions by Kokoouline and Greene [Phys. Rev. A 68, 012703 (2003)]. The branching fractions of the two breakup channels, H+H+H and H+H2, have also been measured for rotationally and vibrationally cold H3 .

Storage ring measurements of the dissociative recombination rate of rotationally cold H + 3

We present dissociative recombination measurements, using the CRYRING ion storage ring, of H3 ions produced in a supersonic expansion discharge source. Before and after the CRYRING measurements, the ion source was characterized in Berkeley using infrared cavity ringdown spectroscopy, and was found to exhibit a typical rotational temperature of ∼ 30 K. Our measurement of the dissociative recombi...

Dissociative recombination of cold H D 3 and its interstellar implications

H3 plays a key role in interstellar chemistry as the initiator of ion–molecule chemistry. The amount of H3 observed in dense interstellar clouds is consistent with expectations, but the large abundance of H3 seen in diffuse clouds is not easily explained by simple chemical models. A crucial parameter in predicting the abundance of H3 in diffuse clouds is the rate constant for dissociative recom...

Investigations of the breakup dynamics of small molecular ions recombining with electrons

Dissociative recombination is the process in which a molecular ion recombines with an electron and then fragments into neutral products. This process has been studied in many experiments over the years at the ion storage ring CRYRING at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University. In this thesis the experimental methods and data analysis procedures used to investigate dissociative recom...

Inelastic low-energy collisions of electrons with HeH+: Rovibrational excitation and dissociative recombination.

Inelastic low-energy (0-1 eV) collisions of electrons with HeH+ cations are treated theoretically, with a focus on the rovibrational excitation and dissociative recombination (DR) channels. In an application of ab initio multichannel quantum defect theory, the description of both processes is based on the Born-Oppenheimer quantum defects. The quantum defects were determined using the R-matrix a...

Anisotropic fragmentation in low-energy dissociative recombination

On a dense energy grid reaching up to 75 meV electron collision energy the fragmentation angle and the kinetic energy release of neutral dissociative recombination fragments have been studied in a twin merged beam experiment. The anisotropy described by Legendre polynomials and the extracted rotational state contributions were found to vary on a likewise narrow energy scale as the rotationally ...
