Experimental Estimates of the Impacts of Class Size on Test Scores: Robustness and Heterogeneity*

چکیده
Proponents of class size reductions draw heavily on the results from Project STAR to support their initiatives. Adding to the political appeal of these initiative are reports that minority and economically disadvantaged students received the largest benefits from smaller classes. We extend this research in two directions. First, to address correlated outcomes from the same class size treatment, we account for the over-rejection of the Null hypotheses by using multiple inference procedures. Second, we conduct a more detailed examination of the heterogeneous impacts of class size reductions on measures of cognitive and noncognitive achievement using more flexible models. We find that students with higher test scores received greater benefits from class size reductions. Furthermore, we present evidence that the main effects of the small class treatment are robust to corrections for the multiple hypotheses being tested. However, these same corrections lead the differential impacts of smaller classes by race and freelunch status to become statistically insignificant. * We would like to thank Caroline Hoxby, Richard Murnane, an anonymous referee and seminar participants at the 2010 International Workshop on Applied Economics of Education, XIX Meeting of the Economics of Education Association, Simon Fraser University and the 2004 AEA annual meetings session on Education for the Disadvantaged for helpful comments and suggestions. We are grateful to Alan Krueger for generously providing a subset of the data used in the study. The impacts of Direct and Indirect Observation on EFL Iranian Teachers' Teaching Quality Improvement
The present paper sought to examine the effectiveness of less experienced teachers' participationin experienced teachers' classes on students' achievements in terms of their proficiency levels inboth Elementary and Pre-intermediate levels. This quasi-experimental design study was conductedin three Language institutes in Tehran, Iran. Twenty-one EFL teachers were selected asexperienced and less ...

Introduction: Nowadays, promotion of the quality in education is the main concern of education authorities. Scholars believe that detecting the related items including the disrupting factors can play a major role in this field. This study tries to survey the influence of stretching and deep breathing exercises on test achievement scores of medical students. Methods: This study adopts a quasi-...
متن کاملHow Close Is Close Enough? Testing Nonexperimental Estimates of Impact against Experimental Estimates of Impact with Education Test Scores as Outcomes
In this study we test the performance of some nonexperimental estimators of impacts applied to an educational intervention—reduction in class size—where achievement test scores were the outcome. We compare the nonexperimental estimates of the impacts to “true impact” estimates provided by a random-assignment design used to assess the effects of that intervention. Our primary focus in this study...
متن کاملThe Effect of Explicit Consciousness-Raising of Autonomous Learning Activities on Iranian EFL Students’ Achievement Test Scores
This study set out to examine the effect of explicit consciousness-raising of autonomous learning activities on a group of students’ General English achievement test scores following a mixed methods design. At the beginning of the study, four intact classes were selected based on their availability, of which one class was assigned to the experimental group and the others to the control groups, ...
متن کاملAre Teacher-Level Value-Added Estimates Biased? An Experimental Validation of Non-Experimental Estimates
For more than three decades, analyses of non-experimental data have reported considerable heterogeneity in teacher impacts on student achievement. We use data from a random-assignment experiment in Los Angeles Unified School District to test the validity of various non-experimental specifications. To do so, we first generated estimates for a group of teachers during a pre-experimental period an...
