Fluorescence Microscopy in Colonic Exfoliative Cytology.

چکیده
Since the introduction of the exfoliative cytological technique in clinical practice, particularly in the diagnosis of malignant disease of the female genital tract, many authors (Friedman, 1950; Mellors and Silver, 1951; von Bertalanffy, Masin, and Masin, 1956; Liu, 1961) have endeavoured to reduce the time required for scanning the smears by the use of fluorescent microscopy. In this new technique, they have employed fluochromes to stain the smears, and then scanned them, using an ultra-violet microscope unit. Although this technique reduces the scanning time, since the microscopist need only inspect areas on the slide which are fluorescing, recent work (Caspersson, and Santesson 1942; Bertalanffy, 1960) appears to suggest that the technique of recognizing malignant cells by demonstrating their cytochemical composition may be as reliable as the morphological criteria used by Papanicolau and Traut (1941). A series of smears has been examined using a fluorescent microscopy technique, and acridine orange, as the fluochrome with a view to reducing the time required to scan the material collected from the colon. The findings are briefly reported.

Urinary cytology with acridine orange fluorescence is highly valuable for predicting high-grade upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical value of acridine orange fluorescent staining in urinary cytology for the diagnosis of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS A retrospective analysis was conducted with 510 cases of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) in terms of the results of acridine orange fluorescence (AO-F) staining of the exfoliated cells in urin...

Considering the progressive frequency of malignancies and the importance of rapid and non-invasive diagnosis of neoplasms, this study was conducted to compare the exfoliative cytology and histopathology in neoplasms diagnosis. In this process-evaluation study, all of the 92 samples that were sent to pathology laboratory were selected sequentially. Diagnosis was determined using two ...

y ke words abstract The authors set out in this study to verify the presence of lowand high-risk DNA of human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral cancer by means of the hybrid capture Digene® test (São Paulo-SP, Brazil) in smears from exfoliative cytology and also to compare the findings with those of conventional light microscopy (hematoxylin-eosin (HE)/Papanicolaou). Forty individuals gave their wri...

BACKGROUND Exfoliative cytology is the microscopic examination of shed or desquamated cells from the epithelial surface. Centrifuged liquid-based cytology (CLBC) is a modified technique that was used in the current study. AIMS To compare the efficacy of CLBC with conventional cytology in apparently normal mucosa after staining with Papanicolaou (PAP) stain. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty cases...
متن کاملThe Case for Exfoliative Cytology of Serous Effusions.
DESPITE a world-wide surge of interest in the cytological detection of cancer, uncertainty about the usefulness of searching for cancer cells in serous effusions still lingers, and this feeling seems strong in Britain, where exfoliative cytology is gaining rather tardy acceptance. In fact, one British laboratory’s poor results with the exfoliative cytology of serous fluids have been adduced to ...
