The direction of the fracture propagation at the interface of zirconia and veneer is investigated in this study. Finite element analysis is performed on a bi-material four point bend specimen in different geometries and the fracture initiation angle is obtained using Maximum Tangential Stress (MTS) criterion. The effect of specimen geometry on the fracture initiation angle is discussed. Because an interface crack may propagate through interface or kink into one of the materials, some comments are given to determine under which condition “interface debonding” will be happened.

The influence of various core designs on stress distribution in the veneered zirconia crown: a finite element analysis study

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate various core designs on stress distribution within zirconia crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional finite element models, representing mandibular molars, comprising a prepared tooth, cement layer, zirconia core, and veneer porcelain were designed by computer software. The shoulder (1 mm in width) variations in core were incremental in...

Cement-Implant Interface Fracture Failure by Crack Initiation Due to Interface Cavity Stress Concentration

Nowadays total joint replacements are widely used in the world, so in average 800,000 joint surgeries are done yearly only in Europe and North America. However implant loosening is and remains as the major issue of all implant failures and therefore causes revision surgery procedures. Studies and experiments have identified poor fixation of implants most likely is the main cause of long term im...

Using the Finite Element Analysis Method to Study the 3-point Bending Test for the Characterization of the Adherence

An elastic finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate the stress distribution in the initiation zone of the adhesive rupture during the 3-point bending test. This test is used to measure the adherence between a polyepoxy adhesive and aluminum alloy with different surface treatments. The purpose is to compare, in the high stress concentration areas, the stress fields calculated using fini...

Finite Element Modeling of Crack Initiation Angle Under Mixed Mode (I/II) Fracture

Present study deals with the prediction of crack initiation angle for mixed mode (I/II) fracture using finite element techniques and J-Integral based approach. The FE code ANSYS is used to estimate the stress intensity factor numerically. The estimated values of SIF were incorporated into six different crack initiation angle criteria to predict the crack initiation angle. Single edge crack spec...

Mechanical and fracture behavior of veneer-framework composites for all-ceramic dental bridges.

OBJECTIVES High-strength ceramics are required in dental posterior restorations in order to withstand the excessive tensile stresses that occur during mastication. The aim of this study was to investigate the fracture behavior and the fast-fracture mechanical strength of three veneer-framework composites (Empress 2/IPS Eris, TZP/Cercon S and Inceram-Zirconia/Vita VM7) for all-ceramic dental bri...
