Patellar Luxation
نویسنده
چکیده
Patella luxations occur frequently in dogs (primarily medial (MPL) [1]) and less commonly in cats [2]. It is normally seen in small breed dogs but is becoming more common in dogs such as the Labrador retriever. It can be unilateral or bilateral (50-65%) of cases. Both conservative and surgical methods are used for correction of patella luxation and this decision-making usually depends on the severity of the luxation (grade> 2 usually requiring surgical correction). Surgical correction of the luxation has a very high failure rate with up to 48% of cases having recurrent luxation of the patella reported in one study (although concurrent lameness was not observed [3]). A more recent study reports overall complication rates of 18% and a reluxation rate of 8% [4]. It is not clear why this failure rate is so high but failure to correct the underlying abnormalities (i.e. decision making errors rather than technical ones) is a likely cause.

Surgical Repair of Lateral Patellar Luxation in Two Foals
Case Description- Two foals were referred for lameness evaluation. Case 1 was an 8-month-old male KWPN foal and the second one was a 2-day-old female Arabian foal. Clinical Findings- The KWPN foal was presented with severe lameness at walk and the second foal was unable to stand. In both patients luxation of the patella was confirmed on physical and radiological examinations. Treatment and Outc...
متن کاملRetrospective study of surgical treatment of various patellar luxations in dogs from 2004 to 2007
Today, the treatment of patellar luxations using current techniques has become a very common procedureas part of the surgical treatment. Nevertheless, there are some doubts about such procedures in restraining the patella in lower grade cases. The purpose of the present retrospective clinical study was to determine theefficacy of the soft tissue and bone reconstructive procedures used for vario...
متن کاملA low morbidity surgical approach to the sheep femoral trochlea
BACKGROUND The ovine stifle joint is an important location for investigations on the repair of articular cartilage defects in preclinical large animals. The classical medial parapatellar approach to the femoral trochlea is hazardous because of the high risk of postoperative patellar luxation. Here, we describe a low morbidity surgical exposure of the ovine trochlea without the necessity for int...
متن کاملProximo-distal patellar position in three small dog breeds with medial patellar luxation.
INTRODUCTION Medial patellar luxation is thought to be associated with a high proximal position of the patella in the trochlear groove. OBJECTIVE To determine whether the ratio of patellar ligament length and patellar length (L:P) is influenced by the stifle angle (75°, 96°, 113°, 130°, and 148°) in small dog breeds and to compare the L:P ratio in dogs of three small dog breeds with and witho...
متن کاملLatero-distal transposition of the tibial crest in cases of medial patellar luxation with patella alta.
Medial patellar luxation is defined as medial displacement of the patella from the trochlear groove. In dogs, medial luxations account for 75% of all patellar luxation cases, and are frequently associated with patella alta. Common surgical treatments for medial luxation are trochleoplasty and lateral transposition of the crest to drive the patella into the correct anatomical alignment. Postoper...
متن کاملCorrection of patellar luxation by recession sulcoplasty in three foals.
Lateral luxation of the patella in four femoropatellar joints of three foals was repaired by recession sulcoplasty and medial imbrication of the joint. One foal was euthanatized because of septic arthritis caused by incisional dehiscence, and the other two foals were normal 2 years after surgery. Recession sulcoplasty combined with medial imbrication of the joint capsule resulted in a functiona...
