Simulating radiation damage cascades in graphite
نویسندگان
چکیده
Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study radiation damage cascades in graphite. High statistical precision is obtained by sampling a wide energy range (100–2500 eV) and a large number of initial directions of the primary knock-on atom. Chemical bonding is described using the Environment Dependent Interaction Potential for carbon. Graphite is found to exhibit a radiation response distinct from metals and oxides primarily due to the absence of a thermal spike which results in point defects and disconnected regions of damage. Other unique attributes include exceedingly short cascade lifetimes and fractal-like atomic trajectories. Unusually for a solid, the binary collision approximation is useful across a wide energy range, and as a consequence residual damage is consistent with the Kinchin–Pease model. The simulations are in agreement with known experimental data and help to clarify substantial uncertainty in the literature regarding the extent of the cascade and the associated damage. 2014 The Authors. Threshold displacement energy and damage function in graphite from molecular dynamics
The environment dependent interatomic potential (EDIP) including ZieglereBiersackeLittermark (ZBL) interactions for close encounters is applied to cascades starting from a host atom and from an interstitial atom. We find the room temperature displacement threshold to be 25 eV, increasing to 30 eV at 900 K. The latter correlates well with the measured threshold for vacancy production. Additional...

Graphite is employed as a moderator and structural component in 18 of the United Kingdom’s fleet of Magnox and Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs). During the operational lifetime of a reactor, graphite undergoes complex physical and mechanical property changes including dimensional modification, owing to the effects of temperature, oxidation and irradiation-induced atomic displacements. In ord...

Transmission electron energy-loss spectrometry was used to investigate the electronic states of metallic Li and LiC6, which is the Li-intercalated graphite used in Li-ion batteries. The Li K edges of metallic Li and LiC6 were nearly identical, and the C K edges were only weakly affected by the presence of Li. These results suggest only a small charge transfer from Li to C in LiC6, contrary to p...

This thesis concerns the physicochemical understanding of radiation damage in graphite. It is structured in two parts, the first being a foundation of elastic and bonding properties in graphite and its intercalation compound with Bromine. The second builds on this with dislocation theory to analyse dimensional change and stored elastic energy. Part 1: Density functional theory (DFT) in the loca...

Fine-grained isotropic graphite is the material of choice for the production target and the beam catchers at the planned Super-FRS fragment separator at FAIR. Heavyion irradiation studies of graphite are needed, as radiation damage will ultimately limit the lifetime of these components. Polycrystalline graphite and highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) were irradiated with energetic ions an...
