Estimates of Variances Due to Sire × Herd Effects for Weights of Hereford Cattle

چکیده

Estimating variances due sire × herd effects requires a large number of sires to be represented in multiple herds, otherwise too much variation between animals is ‘picked up’ as variance due to sire × herd effects, and heritability estimates are biased downwards. Such bias can be avoided by using only records for progeny of multiple-herd use sires to estimate the additive genetic variance. Estimates of variance components and genetic parameters from analyses of weights of Hereford cattle are presented for herds with high, medium and low proportions of multiple herd use sires. Results from analyses estimating separate genetic variances for progeny of single and multiple herd sires, estimating a joint genetic variance for all animals, and ignoring sire × herd effects are compared.

Estimates of variances due to parent of origin for weights of Australian beef cattle pdfsubject

1 Estimates of variances due to differential expression of paternally and maternally 2 derived genes can be obtained from animal model type analyses by fitting appropriate 3 gametic effects. This is feasible for large scale analyses, as the inverse of the gametic 4 relationship matrix can be set up directly from a list of pedigrees. 5 We present a series of analyses applying such model for larg...

Heterogeneity of variance by sire breed, sex, and dam breed in 200- and 365-day weights of beef cattle from a top cross experiment.

The nature of the heterogeneity of variance for 200- and 365-d weights by sex, sire breed, and dam breed subclasses was studied. Data consisted of records for weaning (n = 7,829) and yearling (n = 7,367) weights of progeny from 673 and 672 sires, respectively, from 22 breeds that have been evaluated in the Germ Plasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, NE. Sire X environment interactions for growth traits of Hereford cattle.

Twelve Hereford bulls were used to sire calves in each of three locations in North Carolina over 6 yr. Three bulls were bred artificially to a random one-third of the cows at each location each year. Locations represented the Mountain, Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions of the Southeast. As yearlings, steer progeny were fed a concentrate diet in a feedlot or grazed on pasture and then slaughter...

Factors influencing genetic evaluations of linebred Hereford cattle in diverse environments.

Data from four closely related Line 1 Hereford herds were used to estimate variance components and predict EPD for birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), and postweaning gain (PWG). Herds were located in diverse environments and differed in level of phenotypic performance. Within-herd BWT analyses considered effects of inbreeding of calf and dam, sex, age of dam (AOD), and contemporary group...

Sire x herd interactions for weaning weight in beef cattle.

Weaning weight records of 44,357 Australian Angus calves produced by 1,020 sires in 90 herds were used to evaluate the importance of sire x herd interactions. Models fitted fixed effects of contemporary group (herd-year-date of weighing subclass), sex, calf age, and dam age and random effects of sire or of sire and sire x herd interaction using REML. Effects of standardizing the data, including...
