Tamper Resistance

چکیده

An increasing number of systems, from pay-TV to electronic purses, rely on the tamper resistance of smartcards and other security processors. We describe a number of attacks on such systems | some old, some new and some that are simply little known outside the chip testing community. We conclude that trusting tamper resistance is problematic; smartcards are broken routinely, and even a device that was described by a government signals agency as `the most secure processor generally available' turns out to be vulnerable. Designers of secure systems should consider the consequences with care. 1 Tamperproo ng of cryptographic

Towards a Formal Model for Software Tamper Resistance

A major challenge in software protection is the problem of tampering where an adversary modifies a program and uses it in a way that was not intended or desired. Several ad hoc techniques for software tamper resistance have been proposed, some of which provide a significant level of resilience against tampering. However, the literature lacks a formal definition of tampering that takes into acco...

A Metric-Based Scheme for Evaluating Tamper Resistant Software Systems

The increase use of software tamper resistance techniques to protect software against undesired attacks comes an increased need to understand more about the strength of these tamper resistance techniques. Currently the understanding is rather general. In this paper we propose a new software tamper resistance evaluation technique. Our main contribution is to identify a set of issues that a tampe...

Dynamic Self-Checking Techniques for Improved Tamper Resistance

We describe a software self-checking mechanism designed to improve the tamper resistance of large programs. The mechanism consists of a number of testers that redundantly test for changes in the executable code as it is running and report modifications. The mechanism is built to be compatible with copy-specific static watermarking and other tamper-resistance techniques. The mechanism includes s...

On the Security of Random Key Pre-distribution Schem

Key pre-distribution (KPD) schemes, which are inherently trade-offs between security and complexity, are perhaps well suited for securing large-scale deployments of resource constrained nodes without persistent access to a trusted authority (TA). However, the need to offset their inherent security limitations, calls for some degree of tamper-resistance of nodes. Obviously, if absolute tamperres...

Security of Random Key Pre-distribution Schemes With Limited Tamper Resistance

Towards Better Software Tamper Resistance

Software protection is an area of active research in which a variety of techniques have been developed to address the issue. Examples of such techniques include code obfuscation, software watermarking, and tamper detection. In this paper we propose a tamper resistance technique which provides both on and offline tamper detection. In our offline approach, the software dynamically detects tamperi...
