چکیده

We study a new version of Chua’s circuit where the linear elements are replaced by a delay line. We show that this circuit is a model of an interesting class of musical instruments, namely, those, like the clarinet, consisting of a massless reed coupled to a passive linear system. The properties and behaviors of this circuit are studied with or without a filter in the feedback loop. In particular, the oscillation conditions are determined, and the respective role of the nonlinearity and of the linear elements are explained. Real-time simulations of the time-delayed Chua’s circuit on a digital workstation makes possible easy experimentation with signals and sounds. A surprisingly rich and novel family of periodic and chaotic musical sounds has been obtained. The audification of the local properties of the parameter space permits easy determination of very complex structures that could not be computed analytically and would be difficult to determine by other methods.

Evolutionary Methods for Melodic Sequences Generation from Non-linear Dynamic Systems

The work concerns using evolutionary methods to evolve melodic sequences, obtained through a music generative approach from Chua s circuit, a non-linear dynamic system, universal paradigm for studying chaos. The main idea was to investigate how to turn potential aesthetical musical forms, generated by chaotic attractors, in melodic patterns, according to the western musical tradition. A single ...

A Bond Graphs approach to Physical Modelling of Musical Instruments

In this paper we introduce the use of bond graphs for the implementation of classic physical models of musical instruments. Bond graphs are a diagram-based technique for representing physical systems, such as an electrical circuit or a mechanical engine. They provide a precise and unambiguous modelling tool which allows for the specification of hierarchical physical structures. The paper begins...

Fragile instruments: constructing destructible musical interfaces

We introduce a family of fragile electronic musical instruments designed to be “played” through the act of destruction. Each Fragile Instrument consists of an analog synthesizing circuit with embedded sensors that detect the destruction of an outer shell, which is destroyed and replaced for each performance. Destruction plays an integral role in both the spectacle and the generated sounds. This...

Applications of Bioacoustics in Physical Modeling and the Creation of New Musical Instruments

The similarities between biological and musical acoustic systems has lead to the idea that bioacoustics, and understanding of animal sound production, could provide models for new musical instruments. Physical modeling synthesis of these systems offers the musician the ability to manipulate natural sound, much in the same way s/he would a traditional musical instrument. In this research, the so...

A passive nonlinear digital filter design which facilitates physics-based sound synthesis of highly nonlinear musical instruments

Recent work has led to highly efficient physics-based computational models of wave propagation in strings, acoustic tubes, membranes, plates, and rooms using the digital waveguide filter, the 2-D digital waveguide mesh, and the 3-D tetrahedral digital waveguide mesh, all of which are suitable for real-time musical synthesis applications. A simple first-order nonlinear filter structure derived f...
