A Knowledge Management Perspective an a Corporate Portal Implementation: A Case Study of a Global IT-Management Consultancy Firm

This paper investigates the decisions and factors affecting the implementation of a corporate portal to support knowledge management processes in a global IT-Management consultancy firm. Employing a conceptual framework based on Activity Theory, this study offers some new insights into the implementation of a portal with due consideration of the case organisation’s global operational context which also involves a large user base. Theoretically, by interpreting the factors and decisions exerting influences on the portal implementation, this study enriches the body of literature on knowledge management technology adoption and implementation, and provides an illustration of Orlikowski’s (2000) extended theory on the structurational properties of technology. Practically studies of this nature should assist organisations toward understanding the factors inherent within a successful implementation of portal technology in large firm, particularly those rich in high-value text-based knowledge for making decisions like management consultancies and legal organisations.
