EMG Control for a Robot Hand Used as a Prosthesis

چکیده
Multifingered computer controlled robot hands have been built by researchers to recreate human functionality. Our research is focused on the use of the Belgrade/USC robot hand as a prototype prosthesis for below-elbow amputees. A method has been developed that combines EMG and computer signals to control the phases of prehension. Simulation work presented here, based on pilot data, uses surface EMG from the forearm to provide signals for the control of the hand.

Surface EMG suffices to classify the motion of each finger independently
We introduce a learning method which can detect opening (extension) and closing (flexion) actions of all human fingers, as well as sideways movements (abduction/adduction) using lower arm surface EMG only. The method is shown to be used independently of the position of the arm. The method is ideally suited for the control of active prosthesis with a high number of active degrees of freedom. The...
متن کاملOn the Development of EMG Control for a Prosthetic Hand
The human hand is a complex end-effector capable of an astonishingly large variety of postures. The ease with which the human hand seems to adapt to changing requirements is one of the challenges to the designer of a plausible substitute. At the Robotics Research Laboratory at USC there is an ongoing research project to covert an existing anthropomorphic, shape-adaptive robot hand into a viable...
متن کاملArtificial Human Arm Driven by EMG Signal
Robot arms are versatile tools found in a wide range of applications. While the user moves his arm, (EMG) activity is recorded from selected muscles, using surface EMG electrodes. By a decoding procedure the muscular activity is transformed to kinematic variables that are used to control the robot arm. EMG signals have been used as control signals for robotics devices in the past. EMG signals, ...
متن کاملA comparative study of virtual hand prosthesis control using an inductive tongue control system.
This study compares the time required to activate a grasp or function of a hand prosthesis when using an electromyogram (EMG) based control scheme and when using a control scheme combining EMG and control signals from an inductive tongue control system (ITCS). Using a cross-over study design, 10 able-bodied subjects used a computer model of a hand and completed simulated grasping exercises. The...

1 Upper limb prostheses-design restraints Active prosthetic devices to replace missing hands or arms have much in common with robotic dextrous manipulators for industrial tasks (Gruver, 1994). However, the design of an upper limb prosthesis presents a set of restraints which may differ considerably from those in other robotics applications. A mass-produced robot of standardised design may be us...
