چکیده

Horseshoe crabs have been identified as one of the marine species that contribute greatly to scientific advances especially in haematological studies. Besides the haemocytes of these creatures, they are also well known for their protein contents in the perivitelline fluid (PVF). Due to this, over the years, there has been increasing interests in the scientific community to explore the function of proteins in the PVF of horseshoe crab for applications in various biomedical areas such as immunology, embryology and tissue or cell engineering. This article will review the two main protein components found in the PVF of the horseshoe crab namely, lectins, and hemocyanins with regards to its applications in medical research.

Effects of Perivitelline Fluid Obtained from Horseshoe Crab on The Proliferation and Genotoxicity of Dental Pulp Stem Cells

OBJECTIVE Perivitelline fluid (PVF) of the horseshoe crab embryo has been reported to possess an important role during embryogenesis by promoting cell proliferation. This study aims to evaluate the effect of PVF on the proliferation, chromosome aberration (CA) and mutagenicity of the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS This is an in vitro experimental study. PVF samples were...

Potential causes of mortality for horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) during the biomedical bleeding process

Biomedical companies catch and bleed horseshoe crabs for the production of Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), a product used for protecting public health (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). LAL is a clotting agent, derived solely from horseshoe crab blood cells, which is used to detect the presence of pathogenic gramnegative bacteria in injectable drugs and implantable medical and dental devices (Mikkels...

Horseshoe crabs: biomedical importance and its potential use in developing health-care products

Horseshoe crabs have been a model for many biomedical science studies. Medicinal value of horseshoe crabs comes from its blue blood, eye and exoskeleton (chitin). Ability of blood to clot in the presence of bacteria, rendering the bacteria harmless has created its biomedical importance. Blood cells (amebocytes) carry Factor C, which binds lipopolysaccharide (LPS), undergoes a structural reorgan...

Microbial Cell Surface Display: Its Medical and Environmental Applications

Cell-surface display is the expression of peptides and proteins on the surface of living cells by fusing them tofunctional components of cells which are exposed to the environment of cells. This strategy can be carriedout using different surface proteins of cells as anchoring motifs and different proteins from different sourcesas a passenger protein. It is a promising strategy...

Mini review on value chain of brachyuran crab aquaculture and capture

Crabs are decapod crustaceans living in oceans, freshwater and on land. They are omnivorous scavengers and carnivores. Many of them are edible with tremendous aquaculture potentials. Crabbing in recent years increased rapidly due to nutritive value, and their need for local and international market. Different kinds of gears used for capture are sometimes baited with edible stuff. Catch could be...
