Modelling Primate Social Order: Ultimate and Proximate Explanations
نویسندگان
چکیده
For many species of primates, arguably including humans, social behaviour can be characterised along an axis usually described as running from egalitarian to despotic. Despotic societies are characterised by a strict hierarchy with very few aggressive interactions, but where aggression occurs it is typically violent and usually unilateral from dominant to subordinate. Egalitarian societies have less well-defined hierarchies; frequent, bilateral, but less violent aggression, and a large repertoire of reconciliation behaviours. In this paper we describe our approach to understanding the selective pressures that results in these different social organisations. Our technique focuses on agent-based modelling of the closely related species in the genus macaca. To simplify the problem we have split the models into ultimate and proximate causes, using two different ABM tools for the two different problems. This is work in progress — here we explain our approach, and describe preliminary results from the ultimate cause model.

Proximate and ultimate causes: how come? and what for?
Proximate and ultimate causes in evolutionary biology have come to conflate two distinctions. The first is a distinction between immediate and historical causes. The second is between explanations of mechanism and adaptive function. Mayr emphasized the first distinction but many evolutionary biologists use proximate and ultimate causes to refer to the second. I recommend that ‘ultimate cause’ b...
متن کاملUltimate and proximate explanations of strong reciprocity
Strong reciprocity (SR) has recently been subject to heated debate. In this debate, the "West camp" (West et al. in Evol Hum Behav 32(4):231-262, 2011), which is critical of the case for SR, and the "Laland camp" (Laland et al. in Science, 334(6062):1512-1516, 2011, Biol Philos 28(5):719-745, 2013), which is sympathetic to the case of SR, seem to take diametrically opposed positions. The West c...
متن کاملA mutualistic approach to morality
What makes humans moral beings? This question can be understood either as a proximate ‘how’ question or as an ultimate ‘why’ question. The ‘how’ question is about the mental and social mechanisms that produce moral judgments and interactions, and has been investigated by psychologists and social scientists. The ‘why’ question is about the fitness consequences that explain why humans have morali...
متن کاملUltimate explanations concern the adaptive rationale for organism design
My understanding is that proximate explanations concern adaptive mechanism and that ultimate explanations concern adaptive rationale. Viewed in this light, the two kinds of explanation are quite distinct, but they interact in a complementary way to give a full understanding of biological adaptations. In contrast, Laland et al. (2013)— following a literal reading of Mayr (Science 134:1501–1506, ...
