چکیده

In this paper we study the Multiple Strip Packing (MSP) problem, a generalization of the well-known Strip Packing problem. For a given set of rectangles, r1, . . . , rn, with heights and widths ≤ 1, the goal is to find a non-overlapping orthogonal packing without rotations into k ∈ N strips [0, 1]× [0,∞), minimizing the maximum of the heights. We present an approximation algorithm with absolute ratio 2, which is the best possible, unless P = NP, and an improvement of the previous best result with ratio 2 + ε. Furthermore we present simple shelf-based algorithms with short running-time and an AFPTAS for MSP. Since MSP is strongly NP-hard, an FPTAS is ruled out and an AFPTAS is also the best possible result in the sense of approximation theory.

A Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem

In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...

Closing the gap for pseudo-polynomial strip packing

We study pseudo-polynomial Strip Packing. Given a set of rectangular axis parallel items and a strip with bounded width and infinite height the objective is to find a packing of the items into the strip which minimizes the packing height. We speak of pseudo-polynomial Strip Packing if we consider algorithms with pseudo-polynomial running time with respect to the width of the strip. It is known ...

Hardness of approximation for orthogonal rectangle packing and covering problems

Bansal and Sviridenko [4] proved that there is no asymptotic PTAS for 2-dimensional Orthogonal Bin Packing (without rotations), unless P = NP. We show that similar approximation hardness results hold for several 2and 3-dimensional rectangle packing and covering problems even if rotations by ninety degrees are allowed. Moreover, for some of these problems we provide explicit lower bounds on asym...

Improved Pseudo-Polynomial-Time Approximation for Strip Packing

We study the strip packing problem, a classical packing problem which generalizes both bin packing and makespan minimization. Here we are given a set of axis-parallel rectangles in the two-dimensional plane and the goal is to pack them in a vertical strip of fixed width such that the height of the obtained packing is minimized. The packing must be non-overlapping and the rectangles cannot be ro...

An Approximation Scheme for Strip Packing of Rectangles with Bounded Dimensions
