Extremely compact massive galaxies at z ∼ 1 . 4

چکیده
The optical rest–frame sizes of 10 of the most massive (∼5×1011h70−2M⊙) galaxies found in the near–infrared MUNICS survey at 1.2<z<1.7 are analysed. Sizes were estimated both in the J and K’ filters. These massive galaxies are at least a factor of 4 −1.0 (±1 σ) smaller in the rest–frame V–band than local counterparts of the same stellar mass. Consequently, the stellar mass density of these objects is (at least) 60 times larger than massive ellipticals today. Although the stellar populations of these objects are passively fading, their structural properties are rapidly changing since that redshift. This observational fact disagrees with a scenario where the more massive and passive galaxies are fully assembled at z∼1.4 (i.e. a monolithic scenario) and points towards a dry merger scenario as the responsible mechanism for the subsequent evolution of these galaxies.

Extremely Compact Massive Galaxies at 1.7 < Z < 3
We measure and analyse the sizes of 82 massive (M ≥ 10M⊙) galaxies at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 3 utilizing deep HST NICMOS data taken in the GOODS North and South fields. Our sample provides the first statistical study of massive galaxy sizes at z > 2. We split our sample into disk–like (Sérsic index n ≤ 2) and spheroid– like (Sérsic index n > 2) galaxies, and find that at a given stellar mass, disk–like gala...
متن کاملOn the Dearth of Compact, Massive, Red Sequence Galaxies in the Local Universe
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; data release 7), we have conducted a search for local analogs to the extremely compact, massive, quiescent galaxies that have been identified at z & 2. We show that incompleteness is a concern for such compact galaxies, particularly for low redshifts (z . 0.05), as a result of the SDSS spectroscopic target selection algorithm. We have identifi...
متن کاملHst and Spitzer Imaging of Red and Blue Galaxies at Z ∼ 2.5: a Correlation between Size and Star Formation Activity from Compact Quiescent Galaxies to Extended Star Forming Galaxies
We present HST NICMOS+ACS and Spitzer IRAC+MIPS observations of 41 galaxies at 2 < z < 3.5 in the FIRES MS1054 field with red and blue rest-frame optical colors. About half of the galaxies are very compact (effective radii re < 1 kpc) at rest-frame optical wavelengths, the others are extended (1 < re < 10 kpc). For reference, 1 kpc corresponds to 0. 12 at z = 2.5 in the adopted cosmology. We se...
متن کاملThe Assembly History of Massive Galaxies: What Do We Know?
Understanding the formation history of massive galaxies is one of most popular and longstanding problems in astronomy, with observations and theory addressing how and when these systems assembled. Since the most massive galaxies in today’s universe, with M∗ > 10 11 M⊙ , are nearly all elliptical with uniform old stellar populations, we must probe higher redshifts to discover their full origins....
متن کاملDetection of molecular gas in a distant submillimetre galaxy at z = 4 . 76 with ATCA
We have detected the CO(2–1) transition from the submillimetre galaxy (SMG) LESS J033229.4−275619 at z = 4.755 using the new Compact Array Broadband Backend system on the Australian Telescope Compact Array. These data have identified a massive gas reservoir available for star formation for the first time in an SMG at z ∼ 5. We use the luminosity and velocity width (FWHM of ≃ 160 km s) of the CO...
