Characterization of Piecewise Smooth Images with Wavelets: Application to Noise Variance Estimation
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose a novel approach to the characterization of geometric regions by use of wavelet coefficients. We show that in the absence of noise, geometric regions with edges behave differently from other regions as far as the evolution of their wavelet coefficients through scales is concerned. We use this particularity to identify piecewise smooth subimages in a noisy context on which we perform noise variance estimation, for white noise and 1/f noise.

Planelet Transform: A New Geometrical Wavelet for Compression of Kinect-like Depth Images
With the advent of cheap indoor RGB-D sensors, proper representation of piecewise planar depth images is crucial toward an effective compression method. Although there exist geometrical wavelets for optimal representation of piecewise constant and piecewise linear images (i.e. wedgelets and platelets), an adaptation to piecewise linear fractional functions which correspond to depth variation ov...
متن کاملEstimation of the Optimal Variational Parameter via SNR Analysis
We examine the problem of finding the optimal weight of the fidelity term in variational denoising. Our aim is to maximize the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the restored image. A theoretical analysis is carried out and several bounds are established on the performance of the optimal strategy and a widely used method, wherein the variance of the residual part equals the variance of the noise. A...

Introduction: In this study the evaluation of a Platelet-based Maximum Penalized Likelihood Estimation (MPLE) for denoising SPECT images was performed and compared with other denoising methods such as Wavelets or Butterworth filtration. Platelet-based MPLE factorization as a multiscale decomposition approach has been already proposed for better edges and surfaces representation due to Poi...
متن کاملApproximation and compression of piecewise smooth images using a wavelet/wedgelet geometric model
Inherent to photograph-like images are two types of structures: large smooth regions and geometrically smooth edge contours separating those regions. Over the past years, efficient representations and algorithms have been developed that take advantage of each of these types of structure independently: quadtree models for 2D wavelets are well-suited for uniformly smooth images (C everywhere), wh...

Introduction: An efficient method of tomographic imaging in nuclear medicine is positron emission tomography (PET). Compared to SPECT, PET has the advantages of higher levels of sensitivity, spatial resolution and more accurate quantification. However, high noise levels in the image limit its diagnostic utility. Noise removal in nuclear medicine is traditionally based on Fourier decomposition o...
