چکیده

© Touch MEdical MEdia 2013 Abstract Octreotide has an important role in the medical management of acromegaly. Its place in the management of acromegaly as an adjuvant therapy after neurosurgery is well established with a well-demonstrated efficacy. It can also be used in certain clinical conditions as a neoadjuvant treatment. Clinicians and patients should be aware of the possible side effects of octreotide treatment.

Somatostatin analogues in acromegaly and gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours: past, present and future.

Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder that arises when the pituitary gland secretes excess growth hormone (GH), which in turn stimulates a concomitant increase in serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels. Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NET) constitute a heterogeneous group of tumours that can secrete serotonin and a variety of peptide hormones that may cause characteris...

Active postoperative acromegaly: sustained remission after discontinuation of somatostatin analogues

In patients with active acromegaly after pituitary surgery, somatostatin analogues are effective in controlling the disease and can even be curative in some cases. After treatment discontinuation, the likelihood of disease recurrence is high. However, a small subset of patients remains symptom-free after discontinuation, with normalized growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) ...

A decrease in the dose of pegvisomant was needed for the treatment of acromegaly after adrenalectomy in a patient with coexisting preclinical Cushing's syndrome.

We herein describe the case of a 47-year-old woman with pre-clinical Cushing's syndrome caused by a left adrenal adenoma, which was diagnosed 6 years after trans-sphenoidal selective removal of a pituitary adenoma for acromegaly at age 35. The patient was started on bromocriptine and then somatostatin analogues after the surgery; however, since her serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) val...

Association between dopamine and somatostatin receptor expression and pharmacological response to somatostatin analogues in acromegaly

Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder resulting from excessive growth hormone (GH) secretion frequently produced by pituitary adenomas and consequent increase in insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I). Elevated GH and IGF-I levels result in a wide range of somatic, cardiovascular, endocrine, metabolic and gastrointestinal morbidities. Somatostatin analogues (SSAs) form the basis of medical therapy fo...
