چکیده

We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of LX = 7×1030 ergs s−1 (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3–7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and identify optical counterparts to seven X-ray sources out of the nine sources within the HST field-of-view. Based on the X-ray and optical properties, we find 2–5 candidates of cataclysmic variables (CVs) or chromospherically active binaries, and 2–5 background galaxies inside the half-mass radius. Since the core density of NGC 288 is very low, the faint X-ray sources of NGC 288 found in the Chandra and HST observations is higher than the prediction on the basis of the collision frequency. We suggest that the CVs and chromospherically active binaries are primordial in origin, in agreement with theoretical expectation. Subject headings: binaries: close—globular clusters: individual (NGC 288)—novae, cataclysmic variables—X-rays: binaries

Nearby Spiral Galaxy Globular Cluster Systems II : Globular Cluster

We present new metallicity estimates for globular cluster candidates in the Sd spiral NGC 300, one of the nearest spiral galaxies outside the Local Group. We have obtained optical spectroscopy for 44 Sculptor Group globular cluster candidates with the Boller and Chivens (B&C) spectrograph on the Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. There are 2 globular clusters in NGC 253 and 14 objects...

Nearby Spiral Galaxy Globular Cluster Systems II : Globular Cluster Abundances in NGC 300

Nine of these objects appear to be genuine old globular...

X - Ray Observations of Globular Cluster

A ROSAT HRI X-ray image was obtained of the open globular cluster NGC 288, which is located near the South Galactic Pole. This is the first deep X-ray image of this system. We detect a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source (LLGCX) RXJ005245.0−263449 with an X-ray luminosity of (5.5± 1.4)× 1032 ergs s−1 (0.1–2.0 keV), which is located very close to the cluster center. There is evidence fo...

Deep Mixing and Metallicity: Carbon Depletion in Globular Cluster Giants

We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the 3m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. Spectra centered on the 4300Å CH absorption band were taken for 42 bright red giants in 11 Galactic glo...
