چکیده

The paper presents an overview of VxWorks a Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS). RTOS is defined as a system in which the correctness of the system does not depend only on the logical results of computation but also on the time at which the results are produced. It has to perform critical tasks on priority basis by utilizing resources optimally. VxWorks is one of the most commercially successful RTOS in embedded industry. The features which make it most preferred RTOS are discussed in this paper. Important parameters like memory management, scheduling, runtime performance, development environment are discussed.

Performance Tuning Towards a KVM-based Embedded Real-Time Virtualization System

Virtualization is a fundamental component in cloud computing because it provides numerous guest VM transparent services, such as live migration, high availability, rapid checkpoint, etc. Utilizing virtualization technology to combine real-time operating system (RTOS) and off-the-shelf time-sharing general purpose operating system (GPOS) is attracting much more interest recently. Such combinatio...

An Empirical Evaluation of OS Support for Real-time CORBA Object Request Brokers

There is increasing demand to extend Object Request Broker (ORB) middleware to support distributed applications with stringent real-time requirements. However, lack of proper OS support can yield substantial inefficiency and unpredictability for ORB middleware. This paper provides two contributions to the study of OS support for real-time ORBs. First, we empirically compare and evaluate the sui...

Measuring OS support for real-time CORBA ORBs

This paper compares and evaluates the suitability of realtime operating systems, VxWorks and LynxOS, and generalpurpose operating systems with real-time extensions, Windows NT, Solaris, and Linux, for real-time ORB middleware. While holding the hardware and ORB constant, we vary these operating systems and measure platform-specific variations in context switching overhead and priority inversion...

A Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) Comparison

This article presents quantitative and qualitative results obtained from the analysis of real time operating systems (RTOS). The studied systems were Windows CE, QNX Neutrino, VxWorks, Linux and RTAI-Linux, which are largely used in industrial and academic environments. Windows XP was also analysed, as a reference for conventional non-real-time operating system, since such systems are also comm...

Operating System Performance in Support of Real-Time Middleware

Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software is being evaluated and/or used in an increasing range of missioncritical distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems. Due to substantial R&D investment over the past decade, COTS middleware has recently matured to the point where it is no longer the dominant factor in the overhead, nondeterminism, and priority inversion incurred by DRE ...
