Avian Use of Saltcedar Communities in the Lower Colorado River Valleyl

چکیده
bottomland by the now well-entrenched exotic sa1tcedar (Tamarix chinenses). First recorded in Arizona in the late 1800's, sa1tcedar was not an important species until after 1910 (Robinson 1965). Nevertheless, it is now present in pure communities or mixed with virtually all riparian community types, being absent only from a few stands of honey mesquite. Knowledge concerning those avian species which utilize salt cedar is essential for those agencies involved with river or riparian vegetation management.

Tamarix transpiration along a semiarid river has negligible impact on water resources
The proliferation of saltcedar (Tamarix spp.) along regulated rivers in the western United States has transformed riparian plant communities. It is commonly assumed that transpiration by these alien plants has led to large losses of water that would otherwise contribute to streamflow. Control of saltcedar, therefore, has been considered a viable strategy for conserving water and increasing stre...
متن کاملAn Empirical Algorithm for Estimating Agricultural and Riparian Evapotranspiration Using MODIS Enhanced Vegetation Index and Ground Measurements of ET. II. Application to the Lower Colorado River, U.S
Large quantities of water are consumed by irrigated crops and riparian vegetation in western U.S. irrigation districts. Remote sensing methods for estimating evaporative water losses by soil and vegetation (evapotranspiration, ET) over wide river stretches are needed to allocate water for agricultural and environmental needs. We used the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from MODIS sensors on the...
متن کاملEvapotranspiration from a Saltcedar- Dominated Desert Floodplain: a Scaling Approach
The purpose of this study was to investigate evapotranspiration (ET) from a variety of scales (leaf to landscape) in saltcedar-dominated floodplain vegetation along the lower Virgin River of southern Nevada. Leaf-level gas exchange indicated that saltcedar exhibits similar stomatal conductance as the sympatric phreatophytes arrowweed, mesquite, and willow. However, sap flow in saltcedar was hig...
متن کاملPrevalence of Avian Influenza in Live Bird Markets, Bird Gardens, and Zoos in Iran in 2015: A Cross-sectional Study
Avian Influenza (AI) H9N2 is endemic in Iran; therefore, it is necessary to estimate the disease prevalence among birds in live bird markets (LBMs) and assess the risk spread across the country. Accordingly, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of AI subtypes in LBMs, bird gardens, and zoos during October and November 2015 in Iran and investigate the associated risk factors. Data related...
متن کاملOccurrence, Persistence, and Expansion of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.) Populations in the Great Plains of Montana
—Saltcedar (Tamarix spp.), a shrub native to Eurasia, is associated with major alterations to wetland and riparian systems in the southwestern United States. Since the 1960s saltcedar has been naturalized in northern states of the U.S. where its growth potential and impacts are not well known. Here, we describe the occurrence, age, size, and relative cover of saltcedar populations in several ri...
