The USC AFV-I: A Behavior-Based Entry in the 1994 International Aerial Robotics Competition
نویسندگان
چکیده
The International Aerial Robotics Competition is an annual event sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (AUVS). The competition requires flying robots to locate, manipulate, and transport objects from one location to another. These tasks are carried out under extreme conditions. A robot must operate without human guidance, ensuring system survival, while completing the goals of the competition within a fixed time limit. Creating a flying robot with these capabilities presents many challenges. The robot has to make control decisions that achieve its goals based upon imperfect sensory data while adapting to unexpected situations such as gusts of wind or sensor failure. Additionally, these decisions need to be made in real-time to maintain the safety of the craft. Teams of university students from around the world enter the competition, using a variety of approaches.

An overview of an autonomous helicopter test-bed project at the Autonomous Robots Lab of the University of Southern California is presented. The core of this test-bed is a new autonomous helicopter, the Autonomous Flying Vehicle-II (AFV-II). The AFV-II is an evolution of the original AFV vehicle described in Lewis et al., (1993). The major features of the new vehicle system are: An on-board red...

Robot helicopter research at the University of Southern California began in 1991 with the formation of the Autonomous Flying Vehicle (AFV) Project and continues to the present day. During this time our lab has designed, built and conducted research with three robot helicopters. A brief project history and background is given, followed by a more detailed description of the current state and acco...

Autonomous exploration and mapping of environments is an important problem in robotics. Efficient exploration of structured environments requires that the robot utilize region-specific exploration strategies and coordinate with search other agents. This paper details the exploration and guidance system of a multi-quadrotor unmanned aerial system (UAS) capable of exploring cluttered indoor areas...
