A New Measurement of Cosmic Ray Composition at the Knee
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Dual Imaging Cerenkov Experiment (DICE) was designed and operated for making elemental composition measurements of cosmic rays near the knee of the spectrum at several PeV. Here we present the first results using this experiment from the measurement of the average location of the depth of shower maximum, < X max >, in the atmosphere as a function of particle energy. The value of < X max > near the instrument threshold of ∼ 0.1PeV is consistent with expectations from previous direct measurements. At higher energies there is little change in composition up to ∼ 5PeV. Above this energy < X max > is deeper than expected for a constant elemental composition implying the overall elemental composition is becoming lighter above the knee region. These results disagree with the idea that cosmic rays should become on average heavier above the knee. Instead they suggest a transition to a qualitatively different population of particles above 5 PeV. Measurement of the cosmic ray composition at the knee with the SPASE-2/AMANDA-B10 detectors AMANDA and SPASE Collaborations
The mass composition of high-energy cosmic rays at energies above 10 eV can provide crucial information for the understanding of their origin. Air showers were measured simultaneously with the SPASE-2 air shower array and the AMANDA-B10 Cherenkov telescope at the South Pole. This combination has the advantage to sample almost all highenergy shower muons and is thus a new approach to the determi...
متن کاملMeasuring the Cosmic Ray Composition at the Knee with BLANCA
BLANCA is a new, large non-imaging Cerenkov detector located at the CASA-MIA experiment it Dugway, Utah. Using 144 individual Cerenkov detectors, BLANCA covers an area of approximately 0.2 km and has an energy threshold of 300 TeV. The lateral density function (LDF) of the Cerenkov light in air showers is measured. Since the LDF depends on the primary particle species, a change in composition a...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Reconstruction of primary mass group energy spectra with KASCADE
The KASCADE-Grande experiment was designed for the measurement of extensive air showers induced by cosmic rays of the knee region, i.e. with energies between 0.5 PeV and 1 EeV. Main focus of the experiment is the precise determination of energy and composition of the primary cosmic rays, thus clarifying the nature of the knee. Data of the preceding KASCADE experiment have been used in a composi...
متن کاملThe Cosmic-ray Spectrum: from the knee to the ankle
This talk addresses the question, “Where is the transition from cosmic rays of galactic origin to extra-galactic cosmic-rays?” I have addressed the background of this topic recently in lectures at Erice [?] and, with Todor Stanev, in a collection of papers on various aspects of nuclear astrophysics [?]. Here I concentrate on primary composition as a signature of the transition and mention some ...
متن کاملImplications for the Cosmic Ray Spectrum of a Negative Electron Neutrino (Mass)
Evidence is presented that the electron neutrino may be a tachyon with mass ≈ −4eV /c – a value consistent with results from tritium beta decay experiments. The evidence consists of an explanation of certain properties of the observed cosmic ray spectrum, including: the existence of a “knee” at 10eV , the E power law after the knee, the dip at 10eV , the changes in composition above the knee, a...
