Epidural abscess caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis.

We present an interesting case of a patient who developed an epidural abscess caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis. This is the first report in the medical literature of a spinal epidural abscess associated with this organism. Diagnosis of S. moniliformis infection requires a high degree of suspicion, and a delay may be inevitable when a relevant clinical history is lacking.

We report a case of Streptobacillus moniliformis spondylodiscitis accompanied by a psoas abscess in an 80-year-old man scratched by a rooster. S. moniliformis was identified from abscess fluid by use of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. After 18 weeks of antimicrobial therapy, the clinical condition of the patient improved.

A child owning pet rats developed an eruptive fever with blisters, polyarthritis, and spectacular desquamation of the hands. Streptobacillus moniliformis was identified after culture of the child's blister fluid and was detected in rat samples by molecular methods.
