The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport is a multidisciplinary ournal that publishes research findings across a broad range of ports science and sports medicine disciplines. Whilst this can pose hallenges at times in relation to the many disciplines we need to onsider in achieving a balance of content that sits well together nd provides the breadth of knowledge that our readers request, it llows us to interact with a wide variety of researchers and pracitioners and select strong and interesting papers to publish. A pecific challenge with any multidisciplinary journal is ensuring hat important disciplines, and their contributions to the sports cience and sports medicine areas, are not hidden, but rather ighlighted. One example of a discipline in which we publish is iomechanics and its contributions to skill development and perormance, and it links to injury in sport. Whilst biomechanics can be seen as a defined sub-discipline f sport and exercise science, it is an area that has resonance nd utility across many areas of sport. Although typically many eople will associate biomechanics with the analysis of sporting ctivities and their performance in an attempt to identify better echniques in learning and executing skills, in the broader sports edicine area, biomechanics also has applications in terms of idenifying risk factors for injury. In this issue of the Journal of Science nd Medicine in Sport we include a range of papers that focus on iomechanics. For example, we include a paper by West and coleagues from the United Kingdom who examined the effects of bdominal binding in Paralympic wheelchair rugby players on a ange of performance parameters including wheelchair propulion. Brown and colleagues from the United States investigated the ssociation between lower limb muscle activation strategies and nee joint biomechanics during single-leg landings. Di Michele and erni report on a study from Italy which looked at how groundontact time and strike pattern influences running economy in ompetitive runners. Finally, Koblbauer and colleagues from the nited Kingdom and The Netherlands examined the kinematic hanges experienced during running-induced fatigue, and in turn, he relationship between kinematic changes and core endurance in unners. I also take this opportunity to highlight some of the other ecent papers that we have published that incorporate interestng uses of biomechanics in the sports science and sports medicine elds. Zanca et al.1 in their paper on shoulder rotation in overead athletes with and without impingement symptoms found hat higher torque fluctuation of shoulder internal rotation in

Artificial intelligence in sports biomechanics: new dawn or false hope?

This article reviews developments in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in sports biomechanics over the last decade. It outlines possible uses of Expert Systems as diagnostic tools for evaluating faults in sports movements ('techniques') and presents some example knowledge rules for such an expert system. It then compares the analysis of sports techniques, in which Expert Systems have foun...

Exercise-associated Muscle Cramps in Runners: A Review

Objective: Exercise-associated Muscle Cramp (EAMC) is an intense, painful, and involuntary contraction of skeletal muscles during a physical activity. Runners are more prone to this syndrome than other athletes. The present paper aims to review of the literature on EAMC in runners to determine the reasons and nature of EAMC in this sports field. Methods: A search was conducted for related stud...
