چکیده

This research advances computational cognitive modeling of visual search, and the synergistic relationship between cognitive modeling and eye tracking. The paper presents cognitive models of the perceptual, cognitive, and motor processing involved in the visual search of words in structured layouts that vary in density. The layouts are allsparse, all-dense, or mixed. A principled approach is taken to account for eye movement data, specifically the mean number of fixations per trial and mean fixation durations. A random search strategy without replacement is used as a base model. The best-fitting model assumes that people examine two to three items per fixation regardless of the density. A new implementation of the EPIC cognitive architecture is used to build the models in this study. Modeling adjustments necessary to account for the data are discussed.

Strategy Shifts in Mixed Density Search

Visual search in an important aspect of many tasks, but it is not well understood how many aspects of layout design affect visual search. This research investigates, with reaction time and eye movement data, the effect of local density on the visual search of structured layouts of words. Layouts were allsparse, all-dense, or mixed. Participants found targets in sparse groups faster even after n...

Predicting Cognitive Strategies and Eye Movements in Hierarchical Visual Search

This research advances computational cognitive modeling of visual search, and the synergistic relationship between cognitive modeling and eye tracking. The research examines cognitive models of the perceptual, cognitive, and motor processing involved in the visual search of a hierarchical layout. Two types of visual layouts are searched: unlabeled layouts in which words are arranged in groups b...

Visual search strategies and eye movements when searching Chinese character screens

Most visual search studies have been restricted to alphanumeric stimulus materials. Research related to scanning patterns of Chinese characters is sparse. This study is an attempt to understand the differences and similarities in visual search of Chinese characters having a varying degree of complexity among Hong Kong Chinese, Mainland Chinese and Chinese reading non-Chinese people. Eighteen pa...

Incidental learning speeds visual search by lowering response thresholds, not by improving efficiency: evidence from eye movements.

When observers search for a target object, they incidentally learn the identities and locations of "background" objects in the same display. This learning can facilitate search performance, eliciting faster reaction times for repeated displays. Despite these findings, visual search has been successfully modeled using architectures that maintain no history of attentional deployments; they are am...
