The management of acid-base balance in children with diabetic acidosis.

چکیده
Introduction Metabolic acidosis is one of the many biochemical complications which occur in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus; it is one of the most serious, and it may lead to death (Joslin & Wilson, 1950; Klein & Laron, 1956; Larson, Sterky & Christianson, 1961). Early recognition and treatment of severe keto-acidosis is of paramount importance if the patient is to survive. We discuss this problem in eleven children with diabetic ketosis and the management of the more severe episodes with intravenous bicarbonate solution.

Management of Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Children
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the leading causes of mortality in diabetic children. This study aimed to determine the frequency of mortality and complications of DKA during treatment in order to make the necessary modifications with regard to the common treatment problems. This was a cross sectional study, where patients were selected by examining the records of 112 children under the ...

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of arterial blood gases (ABGs) in determining the type of intoxication. Methods: Medical charts of all patients who had referred to the toxicology ward of Baharloo Hospital between January 2009 and December 2009 were evaluated. After excluding the patients with multi-drug toxicity, data, including age, sex, type of intoxication ...
متن کاملEffect of acute metabolic acidosis and alkalosis on acetate and citrate metabolism in the rat.
An enhanced urinary excretion of citrate after administration of alkali and a diminished citrate excretion after administration of ammonium chloride were first observed by Ostberg in 1931 (1). More recently, it has been pointed out that the quantity of citrate excreted in the urine is not a direct consequence of acidification or alkalinization of the urine as believed by Ostberg, but rather is ...

Thirty-nine episodes of hyperglycemia and disturbance of acid-base equilibrium were classified according to the result of nitroprusside test for serum (or urine) ketones, serum electrolytes, glucose, lactate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and arterial blood pH and gas analysis into the following 6 groups; (1) diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), (2) mild DKA, (3) DKA with mixed acid-base disturbance, (4) DKA wi...
