چکیده

This technical note outlines the design of an external seismic pre-isolation system proposed for use in LIGO Livingston. The goal is to reduce the effects of the site’s excess ground noise in the 1 3 Hz frequency band, allowing detector noise performance equivalent to that of the 4 km LIGO Hanford detector. The center histogram in Figure 8 shows the most troubling aspect of the excess noise quite clearly. The typical 1 3 Hz RMS velocity at LHO is about 2× 10−8 m/s, but at LLO it is typically 10 20 times that during the day. This both makes length control servo lock difficult, and requires greater test mass actuation that adds noise in the gravitational-wave band. In addition, Figure 9 shows that peak velocities in at LLO in the 1 3 Hz band are often as large as 2 5 μm/s. In order to achieve the promised detector performance at LLO, we are considering proceeding with the rapid development, testing, and installation of an additional stage of seismic isolation, shown in Figure 1. This stage would physically support

An Investigation of the Principles and Practices of Seismic Isolation in Bridge Structures

Within the past decade, seismic isolation systems have gained rapid popularity in the earthquake resistant design of bridge structures. This popularity has come in response to the inadequacy of earlier seismic design and retrofit methodologies. The mechanical shortcomings and subsequent failure mechanisms associated with the early elastic seismic design philosophy are first presented, followed ...

Employing Foundation Nonlinearity to Mitigate Seismic Demand in Superstructure

Because of difficulty in inspection and retrofit of foundation in comparison with other elements, the common design philosophy is to avoid any nonlinear deformation in the foundation. This paper shows that by employing controlled foundation nonlinearity, in predetermined sections with arrangements for inspection and retrofit, it is possible to reduce seismic demand on superstructure. Localizing...

Hydraulic External Pre-Isolator System for LIGO

The Hydraulic External Pre-Isolator (HEPI) is the first 6 degrees of freedom active seismic isolation system implemented at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). Implementation was first completed at the LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) prior to LIGO’s 5th science run, successfully cutting down the disturbance seen by LLO’s suspended optics in the two most prominent s...

Multi-Objective Optimization for Performance-based Seismic Retrofit using Connection Upgrade

The unanticipated brittle fracture of connection of the steel moment resisting frame (SMRF) occurred in 1994 the Northridge earthquake. Since then, the researches for the vulnerability of connection of the existing SMRF and for rehabilitation of those buildings were conducted. This paper suggests performance-based optimal seismic retrofit technique using connection upgrade. For optimal design, ...
