That gelatinous connective tissue helps protect the umbilical vessels from compression. Arteries have a thick muscle wall and a lot of elastic fibers which contribute to fast contractions after umbilical cord is tied. These are unique blood vessels because they don’t have adrenergic (alpha and beta) receptors so that arteries and their chorionic branches do not react to changes of concentration of ph, CO2 and catecholamines. This shows that there is a great permeability for the blood rich with CO2 and other degradation fetal products.

We describe an extreme case of amniotic band syndrome, presented with fetal stress during labor and associated with strangulation of umbilical cord.
متن کاملAmniotic band attached to fetal head –a rarest site of amniotic band presentation causing umbilical cord strangulation and fetal demise: case report
Amniotic band syndrome is an uncommon pathological condition that can lead to intrauterine fetal demise .We report an unusual case of amniotic band presentation attached to fetal head in which umbilical cord got strangulated and resulted to fetal loss.
متن کاملStrangulation of the umbilical cord by an amnion band - a rare cause of intrauterine demise: a case report
INTRODUCTION The amniotic band syndrome has a scarce prevalence and intrauterine death as a result of amniotic bands formation is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION We present an illustrative case of intrauterine death of an embryo in the 24th gestational week in an 30-year old primigravida. The death was ascribed to the twisting of the umbilical cord around the left upper extremity, causing a...
متن کاملNuchal cord and its implications
Nuchal cord occurs when the umbilical cord becomes wrapped around the fetal neck 360 degrees. Nuchal cords occur in about 10-29% of fetuses and the incidence increases with advancing gestation age. Most are not associated with perinatal morbidity and mortality, but a few studies have shown that nuchal cord can affect the outcome of delivery with possible long-term effects on the infants. Nuchal...
متن کاملI-40: Ultrasound in Multiple Pregnancy
Ultrasound has revolutioned the care of women carring twins. First trimester evaluation is the best time to determine chorioniocity and amnioniocity in multiple gestations. First trimester diagnosis is based on the number of gestational sacs, amnions and yolk sacs. Growth rate in multiple multiple gestations during the fist and early second trimesters parallels the growth rate of singleton preg...
